“I woke up from the lies,

rose from the thorns,

and walked into my own light.

This is that story.”

“Funny thing about roses…

they don’t hide their thorns.

People do.

Vicki Lawana Trusselli

I learned that under the South Texas sun,

where heat don’t lie

and shadows can’t pretend to be anything but shadows.

Some folks come into your life

spinning sweetness like honey,

but their truth is sharp enough

to cut you clean open.

But a cut ain’t the end.

Sometimes it’s the beginning.”

“I used to think love was supposed to bloom

even in the wrong hands.

But thorns tell the truth

long before the petals fall.

I carried his lies like they were mine,

’til the day I realized

I wasn’t bleeding anymore

I was waking up.

And once a woman wakes up,

there ain’t no going back.”

Cali is my home

No more will I roam

TAINTED LOVE THORN

CHORUS

I felt the thorn of your tainted love,

Cut me deep but it woke me up.

You were sweet like a rose in the South Texas sun,

But the truth hit hard when the lying begun.

Now I walk that long dirt road alone,

Got my pride back, got my soul back home.

You can keep your shadows, I’ll keep my light

I survived your thorn and I’m still upright.

VERSE 1

He came on strong as the hot South Texas sun,

Spun lies in a web of thorns he’d spun.

In a cave lit with star flies burning bright,

Carried truth to the sea of disguise that night.

He spun the world just to meet a girl,

So long ago now, feels like another world.

I take the thorns of the rose to compose,

To shine a light where the darkness froze.

Not with fright, but with a quiet delight,

The thorns fall off the stem in the morning light.

As I remember him, fading in the sun,

A melting, personified, once upon a fun.

Floating out to sea with thorns by his side,

Not me I stayed on shore with my pride.

BRIDGE

I ain’t bitter, I ain’t broken,

Just done with every twisted token.

Your thorn was sharp, but my truth was sharper

I walked out stronger, I walked out smarter.

Now the rose still blooms where my heart once bled,

And the lies you told can’t live in my head.

I’m the woman who rose from the thorn cut night,

Turned pain into power, turned wrong into right.

VERSE 2

I crossed that line from Texas heat to Cali air,

Left the ghosts of his lies still tangled there.

Found a coastline where the waves don’t deceive,

Where the truth rolls in and the shadows leave.

Built a life from the pieces he tried to break,

Turned every thorn into a step I’d take.

Now the sun hits different on this western shore,

I ain’t the woman he fooled anymore.

Got a heart that blooms in a brand new light,

No thorns to hide, no need to fight.

And when the wind blows soft through the old oak tree,

I remember the girl I was and the woman I came to be.

FINAL CHORUS

I felt the thorn of your tainted love,

Cut me deep but it woke me up.

You were sweet like a rose in the South Texas sun,

But the truth hit hard when the lying begun.

Now I walk that long dirt road alone,

Got my pride back, got my soul back home.

You can keep your shadows, I’ll keep my light

I survived your thorn and I’m still upright.

Yeah, I survived your thorn…

and I’m still upright.
