Silence Comes Slowly
The day she changed his WeChat contact name back to his full name, she said nothing. The light from the phone screen fell across her face. Outside the window, the city was at 2:17 a.m. The sign of the convenience store downstairs was still lit, and the humming current sounded like an insect trapped in a glass bottle. She stared at the name for a long time. Three characters, horizontal and vertical, neat. Once she had saved him under a nickname only she understood, with a tiny star after it. She had changed it in the middle of the night, a little embarrassed, a little unable to hide the sweetness. Now she pressed and held, deleted, typed his full name, confirmed. The motion was smooth. She had done it many times in her head.

I don’t know you but it’s 5 in the morning and the rest of the commuters are either at their midlife crisis or not even old enough to truly comprehend it. You sir with your cane and orthopedic shoes walk as fast as your legs won’t allow and yet here you are. I can’t help but to wonder what you are doing or where you are going that’s so important for you to travel before the light has woken up. It makes me wonder what will I be doing once I’ve achieved your age? Will I be walking to a job that overworks me because no one I know is 1 one percent enough to influence ballots and retire?
