dating
All about dating. First dates, three years into a relationship, Tinder, and more.
The strangest date I've ever had.
Staring into my reflection in the resteraunt ladies room I examined the ageing lines on my face and sighed. I was 15 minutes early for a first date with man I had been chatting to on a Dating app and I had finally gotten the courage to meet with him.

A Bottle of Merlot & a First Date!
April 17th,2021! A Bottle of Merlot & A First Date! Written by, Jennifer Cooley! ILLUSTRATION BY KATIE BENN We met as teenagers; I was 16 going on 17, she was 15 going on 16. I was a nightrider, one who lead a mysterious life at night, and a student in school during the day. I with my black hair and piercings stood out against the other students in our school. She was quiet, a plain Jane (at least to her). She dressed normally as normal goes, though to me Allison stood out. Something was different about her, even if she didn't know it! Her closest friends were people she knew since early childhood. Now in high school, things change; people change, friendships become different.

The Highs & MerLOWS
She slammed her laptop shut after a long, virtual workday and grabbed a glass of ice-cold water. She couldn’t even recall which day it was; she just knew it was day one-hundred-and-something of being cooped up in her small, D.C. studio apartment for a government mandate that required everyone to “quarantine”—a term she had only previously heard in horror movies. She had been working from home, the new norm, for what seemed like forever at this point and each day seemed to bleed into the next. Although, the introverted, lone wolf side of her was enjoying being in quarantine, even if it wasn’t by choice. Still, like most others, she experienced bouts of cabin fever and anxiety, sometimes depression, knowing there was this mysterious, deadly virus going around that the world was struggling to contain. Some people had lost their jobs, others were dying, and she had recently moved into her own place, living alone for the first time in her life. Not having anyone physically there for consolation hit hard, but this stagnant, solitary state forced her to sit with her emotions and begin processing them, including the negative ones that persisted from her previous romantic relationship that ended over a year ago. She knew she had to remain positive and keep herself entertained in healthy ways. Fortunately, she had all of the resources on-hand to do so. She had equipment to exercise when she wanted to, several TV streaming subscriptions, books, art supplies, as well as plenty of food, alcohol, and toilet paper after stocking up. She was also granted the gift of time, allowing her to focus on her dog, Gatsby, and other things that had been previously neglected. One of those things was something she had subconsciously been avoiding for some time: dating.

The Dream Date.
Oh, bloody hell! Nothing nice about the feeling of oneself, on the verge of pissing themselves in the car, when they’re about to go on a picnic date! Why the hell did I open and consume that second big can of energy drink? It’s not like I’m actually that tired or anything. Nervous as hell, but not tired...... okay maybe a little tired but that’s from the nerves – you see for the first time in ages, this old duck is going on a date! A real date, with a real guy! A man! A real man! Laugh now but this is a big thing for me.

To live again
“Come on Joanne! When is the last time you’ve gone out and had a fun night? You’re not going to live forever you know.” My friend Christy could be pushy at times especially when it came to my social life. “It’s been a while Christy, but I am ok with that. I’m okay being a little hermit and staying in.” Christy was trying to convince me to let her set me up on a date with one of her friends. “You have not been out in forever Joanne. You deserve it!” The last time I went out on a date was with my husband. I didn’t feel right about dating after losing Josh.

Lost in Time
Gold bands of light from the rising sun emerged between the mosaic of rooftops that sprawled endlessly into the distance, moving between curved lanes and wending alleyways. There was nothing sharp about Paris. Instead, the city existed as something alive. The roll and dip of the streets never ceasing to move, the buildings curving and swaying in time with life itself. Even the corners, for there were some, held an endless kind of quality to them. There were no abrupt finishes, no severe edges in this city. Everything flowed together in an endless kind of dreamscape. Dramatic, romantic, living, breathing.
