I Stopped Looking for Grand Romantic Gestures. Then I Noticed the Grapes.

A healthy relationship looks like two bowls of noodles, one without scallions, and an umbrella by the door.

She worked overtime until ten. Her phone was dead. She pushed open the door. The entryway light was on. He was crouched on the floor fixing the faucet. A bag of grapes sat beside the wrench. She changed shoes. He nudged the slippers toward her feet. He did not ask why she had not replied. She washed her hands. When she came out, a bowl of soup was on the table. She took two sips. “I’m tired,” she said. “Take a shower first,” he said. “The water’s hot.”

The apartment was small. The couch was old. A pothos hung on the balcony. She could go bare-faced. She could tell him the stupid thing that happened today. She could say, “I don’t want to talk.” He did not press. She did not check his phone. When he was busy, she did not panic. When she came home late, he did not make snide remarks. Security comes from steady, repeated things nobody watches. Piling up “I love you” does not build it.

Ease

Many people think love means becoming easy to deal with. Answer every message. Keep your emotions stable. Bow your head first in a fight. Digest sadness alone. A relationship that makes you cautious and silent is draining you.

In a healthy relationship, you do not perform. She can burp, cry, go bare-faced. She can skip socializing. He can say, “I’m tired today. I don’t want to talk.” She goes to meet friends. He walks her to the subway and tucks a power bank into her bag. When she returns, he is chopping vegetables. There is cilantro on the cutting board. She does not like cilantro. He picks it into his own bowl. She does not say thank you. He does not say, “Look what I did for you.” These gestures are too small for Moments. Days loosen because of them.

Details

Love hides in details. Make the home clean and cozy. Prepare everyday things for each other: toothbrush, slippers, pajamas. Remember what he likes and hates. Clean regularly. Home can be a warm harbor. Ritual makes ordinary days shine. You can afford flowers. You still smile when he gives you flowers. You can live well alone. You still want someone to love you.

One-sided details become resentment. If you always clean, prepare, remember, and manage, that is not romance. That is a nanny relationship.

She keeps stomach medicine for him. He applies a screen protector for her. She remembers where his socks go. He remembers her period. She cleans. He takes out the trash. She buys flowers. He changes the water. She buys slippers. He straightens them. She works late. He leaves a light on. He goes on a trip. She tucks tissues into the inner compartment of his suitcase. Love means both people put each other in their hearts. A slogan does not wash grapes. A slogan does not boil water. A slogan does not leave an umbrella by the door.

Fighting

No couple avoids fighting. The quality of a relationship depends on how you handle conflict.

Some couples fight at 2 a.m. over small things. They have work the next morning. Work is already exhausting. Then they split off energy for relationship problems. They force emotions down so work is not affected. That kind of love drains you.

They fight about whose home to visit for New Year. She raises her voice. He closes the window. He does not want neighbors to hear. She slams the bedroom door. Ten minutes later, she comes out. He sits at the dining table. Two bowls of noodles wait. One has no scallions. She sits. She hands him chopsticks. “I got worked up,” he says. “Me too,” she says. They eat. Then they look up train tickets. They have work tomorrow. They do not bicker until dawn. One “sorry” does not hold it up. Noodles, chopsticks, and a train ticket do.

A good relationship can have cracks. Both people repair them.

Character

Loving someone with a good character lasts.

What is character? Kindness. Honesty. Responsibility. Emotional stability. Respect. It shows in how he treats a waiter, family, someone weaker, a promise. Passion fades. Novelty dulls. Looks change. Character does not easily change.

A waiter spills water. He asks if the waiter got burned. She watches. Later, he thanks the delivery driver. He steps aside for the cleaning lady. She notices. If someone is only good to you but harsh, cold, and volatile to everyone else, be careful. When love stops being intense, he will treat you the same way. Skip the person who only puts you on a pedestal during the honeymoon phase. Look for someone upright, gentle, and measured. He loves you because he knows how to cherish.

Boundaries

A healthy relationship is not conjoined twins. You can have friends, hobbies, careers, and space. He does not explode because you have friends of the opposite sex. You do not turn his gaming into “you don’t love me.” You are lovers. You are also two independent people.

She goes to the beach with friends. He plays games at home. She sends a photo. He replies, “It’s windy. Bring a jacket.” She does not reply. He does not push. At night, she calls. He picks up. Game sounds play in the background. “Keep playing,” she says. “Okay,” he says. Before hanging up, he says, “I’ll pick you up tomorrow.” Boundaries are respect. Respect that the other person is independent. Respect your own feelings. You can love him without betting your whole life on him. You can depend on him and still hold yourself when you are sad.

“Under the cherry tree, anyone looks beautiful. My love is passionate for anyone. Not because you are good, but because I am.” You are already a complete person. Your love is passionate because you can love.

Reality

Many people ask if dating longer makes marriage harder. Avoidance makes marriage harder. Time does not.

A healthy relationship talks about the future and reality. How to spend money. How to divide housework. Whose home to visit for New Year. Whether to have children. Where the boundaries with parents are. How to talk about sex. These topics are not romantic. They decide how far the relationship goes. If someone avoids commitment, says “later,” and makes you wait, they are being irresponsible.

They are at the supermarket. She picks up yogurt and checks the date. He picks up strawberries she likes and checks the price. On the way home, they talk about the mortgage, New Year, parents. She says she does not want a wedding. He says they will not have one, but they have to treat Grandpa and Grandma to a meal. She says they each manage their own money. He says they will pay the mortgage together. The receipt goes into a pocket. The strawberries stay in hand. They are not afraid of disagreement. They find answers together. Intimacy means settling accounts, lining up, and going home together even when you disagree.

Liking Yourself More

People in love become prettier. Love steadies hormones. It softens the voice. It makes the heart tender. The eyes shine. You buy new clothes. You take care of your hair. You look forward to dates. Someone cherishes you. You cherish yourself more.

More important than becoming prettier is liking yourself more in the relationship.

She used to cry at midnight when she was in love. Now she goes to the flower market on weekends. She buys sunflowers. He finds a bottle. She goes out bare-faced. He glances at her. “You look well today,” he says. She smiles. She says nothing. She no longer guesses every day, cries every night, and bows her head every time. Good love is a harbor. It nourishes instead of consuming. You do not have to be perfect. Be honest with each other. You will have conflicts. Repair them. Be independent. Rely on each other. Enjoy romance. Face reality. After being together, you both become people you like more.

Monday morning. She puts stomach medicine in his bag. Before he leaves, he hands her an umbrella. “It’s going to rain this afternoon,” he says. The door closes. The elevator numbers count down. A drop of water from the umbrella tip sits on the mat.
