Before you ask, no, I'm not sponsored by Burger King xD

But when it comes to fast food, everyone likes to have things just the way they like it. Whether it's customized toppings, requesting fresh food, or knowing the best time of day to go, it's hard to find someone who is 100% satisfied with getting fast food just the way it comes.

While a lot of fast food places frown upon overly customized meals and items, Burger King is one of the only fast food places around that encourages you to customize. Their slogan isn't "have it your way" for nothing. Whether you love or hate Burger King, you can't argue that they really put you in charge of your meal. In fact, BK has been catering to customer's customization demands for decades.

BK's signature item, the Whopper, is currently going through a "re-brand" where the company is emphasizing not just how tasty a Whopper is, but how you can make a Whopper your own. Unlike sandwiches like the Big Mac where there's a set recipe, a Whopper is kind of a blank canvas if you want it to be. With that said, here are some tips to get the best Whopper you can possibly get.

4. Pile on the toppings

The standard toppings on a Whopper is lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, and mayonnaise. If you really want to elevate the flavor and the body of your burger, go heavy on the toppings. Double the lettuce, add more pickles, add more mayo or ketchup. You can even add toppings like onion rings, jalapenos, mustard, American or Swiss cheese, and bacon.

To make it easier to eat, you can even request that it is cut in half.

3. Try a non-toasted bun

Aside from now coming in a box instead of wrapped in paper, the Whopper now has a fluffier bun that is meant to withstand the burger better than before. The standard at BK is to toast all buns prior to service, but next time give an untoasted bun a chance. BK enthusiasts say the new buns are even better without the added texture or flavor from the toaster.

If you don't want a bun at all, you can even request "low carb" and get it without a bun.

2. Try a different sauce

Like I said, the standard condiment combo for a Whopper is ketchup and mayonnaise, but you can get a lot of other condiments. While the only options to add directly to the burger are mustard and BBQ sauce, you can request packets of buffalo, honey mustard, ranch, sweet & sour, or zesty sauce.

Personally, a Whopper with zesty sauce instead of ketchup & mayo is pretty damn good.

1. Request it hot off the broiler

Burger King's famous claim that their burgers are flame broiled is actually true, and it's been true since the chain opened in 1954. Compared to other restaurants that cook burger patties on flat-top griddles or steam the meat, BK burgers are guaranteed to deliver a charred flavor. But just like any other fast food restaurant, your burger patty may have been sitting in the warmer for a while. If you want the ultimate Whopper experience, set aside some extra time and request that your burger patty be flame broiled to order.

You're more likely to receive a fresher burger patty if you go during a lunch or dinner rush, but you can request a freshly cooked patty at any time of the day. As someone who worked at BK as a teenager, fresh is 100% the way to go with anything from this place.
