Growing up, my family wasn't too fond of cucumbers. Like squash, that was food my parents seemed to like and didn't share. As I became older and learned more about the process of pickling, I found myself fascinated by cucumbers and their versatility.

Scientifically known as Cucumis sativus is a plant member of the Cucurbitaceae family. Cucumbers are related to melons and squash.

In ancient times, cucumber was grown and used for medicinal alongside food purposes.

My soft introduction to cucumbers was within a lunch salad. Since then, cucumbers have offered many health benefits that improved my immunity, skin, hair, nails, and my sleep!

Here a few reasons why cucumbers should be on your grocery list.

Rehydrate yourself!

On summer days, I love a tall iced cold glass of detox water infused with cucumbers. It's absolutely refreshing to drink as well as beneficial to my immunity.

Cucumbers have high water content which helps relieve dehydration.

Thirteen studies with 3,628 participants discovered foods with high water content and low-calorie foods can help lower body weight.

Reduce your risk of cardiovascular ailments.

High cholesterol and heart strokes are the leading cardiovascular diseases shortening lives.

The next time you chop up a few cucumber slices for your afternoon salad realize how eating the superfood is maximizing your immunity.

Cucumber is packed with the antioxidant, lignan. Studies stated lignans found in cucumber can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The Gourd family plant member contains flavonoids and triterpenes, plant chemicals that combat diseases.

According to the International Nutrient of Health Services, cucurbitacins can reduce cancer cell growth.

Cucurbitacins found in cucumber combat cardiovascular diseases ranging from pancreatic cancer cells, colorectal cancer, cholesterol issues, and atherosclerosis.

A 2019 study published in the Journal of Cancer Research discovered cucurbitacin supplements can halt the growth of seven pancreatic cancer cells by 50%.

Other studies stated cucumber terminates lung cancer cells. Cucurbita found in cucumbers blocks human lung cancer by 90%, reduces the surrounding tissues by 75%, and lowers cell migration ability by 88%.

Protect your gut health.

Bloating is a sign to pay attention to your gut health.

Soluble fiber is the food remedy to help "unload" some of your gut-like baggage.

Pectin is found in the low-calorie superfood, a soluble fiber, which helps promote bowel regularity.

A study with 80 participants found that pectin-enriched foods will increase intestinal muscles and improve gut health.

On sunny days, I love to recharge my solar plex chakra with purified water with cucumber. Contrary to the health benefits, the flavor of natural fruits and spring water can't be duplicated.

Adding a third of cucumber to your meals throughout the day offers the daily value of various vitamins C, D, K, minerals, magnesium, manganese, and potassium. These essential vitamins and minerals are required for cell recovery, stable cardiovascular health, and bone development.

The colorfully-grown fruit is packed with various antioxidants, like flavonoids and tannins, useful against harmful free radicals. Harmful free radicals can dehydrate your body causing dull skin tone, brittle nails, dry hair, and low energy.

Prior to using, rinse your cucumber. Some grocery produce has waxy-like surfaces as a protection barrier for [public] hygiene and aging purposes.
