Lately, I’ve been having a lot of fun making playlists. I find it relaxing and a good way to express yourself through the music. Of course, when Vocal announced it’s anti-valentines playlist, I gave it a go straight away. I reccomend anyone who‘s a writer on Vocal to give their challenges a try, because they do have some challenges that free members can write for as well. At the moment, they have a very generous three month trial. I’ve attached my playlist on Spotify below and I’m gonna go through with why I picked them.

Valentines day. As a retail worker, this holiday has put me in a defeated mood more than once. Showing up to work and every isle flipped to mush season. Red heart balloons strung about, pink heart shaped cookies, and endless love songs on the radio. It just reminded me of past disappointment.

Let’s face it, Valentines’ day is not for everyone. How many of us are tired of listening to the same love songs everyday? Sometimes having an anti playlist is just as fun. I had a lot of fun putting my first one together, so I made another one too. I also have a lot of history with this playlist. On my way to school, I used to listen to this tape and it had about six or seven songs on this playlist.

Believe it or not but we owe Valentine's Day to the ancient Romans. I wouldn't be just speaking for myself, saying that we'd be much better off if they kept it in their era. Anyways, at the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius made it official that every year on February 14th, the world will celebrate St. Valentine's Day. So here we are, 1525 years later celebrating love with cheesy pig shape chocolate boxes and coffee mugs with sentences that deserve a creative jail time. People are desperately trying to make up for the lack of love they shared the other 364 days of the year. They buy gifts neither needed nor appreciated. They feel like everyone around them should celebrate too, and they fire arrows from their eyes like confused little cupids. The reality is, not everyone wants to celebrate Valentine's Day, whether it's because we don't have a significant other or maybe we hate the cringe of it all and the unnecessary pressure to be part of it. Valentine's is not for everyone, and it might be genuinely unpleasant for some of us. But there's a way around it- good music. Let's lift our spirits with this unique playlist made by me for us.

February is arguably the worst month of the year. It’s cold, it’s snowing frequently, it's still dark most of the day, and there’s nothing that exciting going on.

This week we lost another living legend. Armando Anthony Corea aka Chick Corea, one of jazz piano’s giants, passed away at the age of 79. Winner of 23 Grammys, he played for other jazz legends such as Herbie Mann, Stan Getz and Miles Davis, and that was before embarking on an epic solo career. He most notably helped to usher in the jazz fusion era, and was still a prolific performer and composer. He won his 23rd Grammy last year for Best Latin Jazz Album.

You've done the right thing, you know you have. You weren't happy, what they did was cruel, you have different life goals. It was the right decision. It was.

Our first choice of the night, (listening at night as a soundtrack to your solitude is recommended), is: "The Sheltering Sky" by King Crimson, from the record "Discipline", 1981.

Somewhere in my parents' garage is an old file box full of mix tapes I made in middle and high school. I refuse to let my Mom throw them out. It would mean throwing away my teen angst, love of grunge, and my obsession with love songs made evident by the number of tapes entitled "Slow Songs" in my youthful, round handwriting. It was also a lot of work. Some tapes were carefully planned out, while others took hours to create waiting for the perfect song to come on the radio and pressing the "play" and "record" buttons in unison at just the right time. And of course we cannot forget cranking the cassette reel with a pencil to make sure it did not begin 5 seconds into the first song. I was very proud of my skills and even though it is much easier and cheaper to create a playlist today, I have to admit I do miss the dedication and joy that went into it. I miss the trips to Tower Records and Rasputin's, searching for new cassette singles (it was usually all I could afford) after a new music video premiered on MTV. Ah the music days of yore and yesteryear.

As someone who has religiously been attending concerts since I was 11, I can tell you firsthand that the pandemic has caused some chronic concert withdrawal. The feeling of being in the crowd amongst others who are all there for the same reason you are, is a special and intimate feeling.

Valentine's Day: Another year, another bottle of wine and half eaten bag of shredded cheese as you morph into your sofa watching reruns of The Office while secretly hating on Jim and Pam. You debate texting your ex, or maybe opening Bumble for a couple of fresh swipes, cause maybe tonight you'll get lucky. Except that doesn't have to be the case this time around, and probably shouldn't...
