Kill Bill - Volume 1 (Critique)
I hated it the first time. Over the top, silly, too long, too violent, too muddled. But now? Each scene - no, each frame - gorgeously stylised, terrific badass protagonist, perfectly chosen soundtrack (seriously, spot-on), exquisite casting.

Paul - Critique
Wildly underrated film. Funny, very quotable, great soundtrack. Pegg and Frost are PERFECT together in this. Jason Bateman's great as well, and Sigourney Weaver puts in an appearance. You'll learn how to cuss like a pro. Should have been in the Cornetto trilogy instead of The World's End.

Snow White (Disney 1937) - a critique
A timeless tale, a technically brilliant telling. But the modern lens is brutal: the humour and themes don't hold up. An awful protagonist: a wet hen with a grating voice and no personality, surrounded by little leches. Never walks; minces everywhere waving her arms. Best character: Grumpy. Watch instead: Rammstein.

New Musings on the Block
I noticed recently that I've got 3,000 reads! Whoever you are, thank you. I wanted to mark this milestone somehow, but wasn't sure how. Then I read Lilly Cooper's Top Story about writer's block. (If you haven't read it yet, go and have a look - it's insightful!)

Run, Run, As Fast As You Can.... First Place in Tales Retold Challenge. Top Story - August 2023. Content Warning.
Please bear with me, dear reader. I am going to back up a ways, and try to find, in some meandering way, the point where everything began. A tricky thing, at the best of times, I'm sure you can agree.

Critique - Oppenheimer. Top Story - August 2023.
Roughly 50% of the frames were close-ups of Cillian Murphy's face either thinking hard about quantum, noticeably aging or rocking an amazing hat. Watch Barbie instead - it's an extravaganza of pink vomit with its own problems, but at least your bladder won't burst two-thirds of the way through it.

The Little Writer
The memory is a little fuzzy around the edges, but some bits of it are sharp. I am sitting cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by a jumble of boots, shoes, sandals, trainers and slippers. Hunched forward over the pale plastic wellie-boot cradled in my lap. My pudgy fingers gripping my stolen treasure - a blue biro. I huff my fringe out of my eyes to better see my craft and avoid smudging the blue ink.
