Why I Still Ask People Where They Are Originally From
I know that asking people where they are originally from is not considered to be "politically correct" in today's society, and I can understand the reasons for that. You don't want to make people feel as if they don't belong. Here in Canada, a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian, as our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once said. And I don't ever want to make a Canadian feel that they aren't Canadian.

The Eternal Israel-Palestine Stand Off Continues
I'm getting old. Well, 47 years old. To some, that may not seem old. But, there are days when, to me, it feels darn old. For as long as I can remember, the Israeli-Palestinian issue has simmered, every once in a while exploding into an orgy of violence before it settles down again. Although the players may have changed over the past 70 years, for the most part, absolutely nothing else seems to actually change in the dispute. It just keeps going and going, a never ending cycle of tense peace and explosive war. Over and over and over....and then over again.

I Don't Fear Government Surveillance, I Fear Citizen Surveillance
I've come to the conclusion that the government could care less about what I do and don't do as long as it is within the law. I have come to the conclusion that those I have to watch out for are my fellow citizens, most of whom have cameras on their phone and are happy to whip them out any chance they get to capture any indiscretion that they see people make. For some reason my fellow citizens seem to care a whole lot more about what I am doing than anyone in government.

I am Not Your Ally
In the world of social justice, it appears that everyone is looking for an ally. Or at least they are looking to use the word ally as many times as they possibly can in a sentence. And those who want to be allies love being called allies. It seems to be a kind of badge of honour. They see it as a sign that they are on the right side of history and in the corner of the good guys. So, they crave that title of ally.

"Free Range" Parenting? Or Just Parenting?
I'll start this by making myself sound old and curmudgeonly: Back when I was a kid, things were so much better! I think everyone thinks that on some level. Fond childhood memories of a "simpler" time flood peoples brains. Nostalgia paints some stuff in a very positive light.

Richard Dawkins Has Been Cancelled...Again
Richard Dawkins is, indeed, a polarizing figure. He is hated by many theists and even atheists. He has been called arrogant, mean, and rude. But, when it comes to evolutionary biology, he is one of the best out there at being able to lay out his arguments and evidence in a way that the average person can easily understand and appreciate. He is also a leader when it comes to atheism and challenging religious dogma and has inspired many atheists to come out of the closet, as it were.

Digital Blackface? Really?
The thing about anti-racists is that some on the more extreme end of thinking are always looking for brand new ways to figure out how to accuse non-racist people of somehow being racist. Some of them just seem to like "Gotcha!" moments and moving goalposts in order to trap more and more people.

And the Award for the Best Anti-Racism Anthem Goes to...
Anti-racism is all the rage these days, and, you know, for good reason. Racism is, without a doubt, bad. And, you know what helps in the fight against racism? Art! Music! Writing! Poetry! It's a powerful way to get messages across to the masses.
