The History of the Cocktail
What is a cocktail? In order to best understand the history of the cocktail, it’s best to first understand what exactly a cocktail is. Is a martini a cocktail? What about a rum and coke? Modern usage and definitions classify just about any alcoholic drink as a cocktail. Officially though, a true cocktail is an alcoholic drink made of a liquor, water, sugar, and bitters. This definition has become a bit more lax over the years, but this basic formulation is a good place to start.

We meet up in bars, pubs, and house parties and these beverages somehow facilitate adult human socialization... they're quite the catalyst. Naturally, we must appreciate the classics, but in doing so, we must also realize the room for innovation.

Best Brandy Cocktail Recipes Everyone Should Know
I love brandy, and I think it's criminally underrated as a sipping spirit as well as an ingredient in cocktails. As the latter, one of brandy's biggest strengths is its surprising adaptability. Its enticing aroma and oaky undertones hold up on their own in strong, simple cocktails like the Sidecar, but it can also be "dressed down," so to speak, to accommodate subtler flavors in softer drinks such as the Brandy Alexander.

Simple Bourbon Cocktail Recipes Everyone Should Know
If you have gotten past the confusion between whiskey and bourbon (spoiler, all bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon), and you understand that bourbon is always made in the U.S., stored in new charred oak barrels, and distilled to no more than 190 proof, then you are ready to expand your horizons and try some simple bourbon cocktail recipes.

Classic Tequila Cocktail Recipes Everyone Should Know
Tequila is one of my all-time favorite spirits. It enjoys immense popularity across North America, but I think its strengths are underutilized in the United States. North of the border, tequila is best known for the Margarita, which is delicious, but almost never properly executed. There are a couple other popular tequila drinks like the Tequila Sunrise or (shudder) tequila shots, but these fail to take advantage of the spirit's true potential.
