sleight of hand

watch closely...

dear bleeding heart,

-

why do you give it all away?

too much never feels like

enough at the time.

you're always in a mad rush,

on a foolish high

throwing love around

to everyone within reach.

you don't know when to pull back,

apply the brakes,

and then we're left in the red.

a deficit.

an ache behind the sternum

that time barely begins to heal

before the hurt cycles again,

and again,

and again.

an abundance of love to give,

but too many takers,

grabbing with greedy fists,

draining us dry

as they make promises,

so many promises.

all that remains is a final sleight of hand

to steal the last drops,

then take our dignity

and go.

-

but what is there without love?

sincerely,

depleted

heartbreak

Felt every single heartwrenching line. You just have a wonderful way with words, as I've said before, Heather! This is no exception and a great entry. Just love your ability to take an idea, a thought, an emotion and run with it until you've left nothing off the page! mumbles Fin!

‘Sincerely Depleted’ ….nice touch. You say what we feel, in a passionate way.

  • I agree with Gina, at least to a degree. But I find myself wondering is it possible when this is so much a part of our nature, to respond with care to whatever need arises, receiving a momentary acknowledgement & nod of gratitude, only to be abandoned & taken for granted within seconds when we're longing/needing something more. Not even necessarily that much more. Just a pause before heading out the door, a return to let you know that you're seen, appreciated, loved & held dearly. Perhaps that last is expecting too much. To receive that tenderness that asks nothing & is only there for you, do we have the will or strength left to allow ourselves to be so vulnerable? Or have we become so depleted, so empty inside, that nothing will ever be able or allowed to fill that void. Do we have it left in us to permit that vulnerability which may very well reduce us to a quivering, gasping puddle of tears? If nothing else, & I understand this may still seem like not much when that sense of emptiness & depletion becomes whelming, but these people are here for you. They see you. They hear you. They love you. They hold you in their hearts.
