Dad’s hands built the beast

Roadworthy sleeper camper

Three kids crammed up top

*

Nine hours, overnight

Boundless enthusiasm

Happened like a miracle

*

Better than Santa

Our own private secret stash

Waited all year long

*

Cutting through corn fields

Sis cries out, “I see the sign!”

Grandpa’s country store!!!

*

Pouring out, we fly

Up the stairs and deep inside,

Find our treasure trove!

*

Pure delight awaits

Happiness, so quickly found

Summer's wonderland

*

Decadent sugar:

Penny candies by the pound

Magic on our tongues

*

Rainbow jawbreakers,

Teaberry gum, licorice,

Bottlecaps, Sixlets

*

Lollipops, Smarties,

Jelly Bellies pouring down,

Target Cigarettes

*

Every thing is yum

Cannot wait to find my fill--

I can hardly breathe

*

Each child gets a bag

Filled sky high with tasty treats

Heaven at eye-level

*

Salt water taffy

Candy canes and waxy lips

Whistle Pops, Dots

*

Purple Bubble-Yum,

Jolly Ranchers, Mike & Ikes --

Salivating tots!

*

Grandpa is the king

Business man, farmer, hero

Keeper of our bliss

*

Tastes bittersweet now

Long ago, too far away

Miss him every day

I like how this mixes your childhood with the fantastical descriptions Christy, and there are some excellent listings of lollies like “Salt water taffy Candy canes and waxy lips”🤗

Christy! Congrats on your win. I love your poem and the memories of my own childhood trekking to the corner candy store for the same goodies! I also love your technique to take a fond memory of not just something, but someone. Beautifully done!

Boy does this bring back memories of the little corner store down the block from my grandparent's home where the owner and family lived in an apartment above it. I loved the poem's evocation of childhood adventure and sweets. Precious, precious memories. Your aunt's painting is wonderful! Is it a water color?
