On Mother's Day

However that looks to you.

Maybe you had a wonderful mom

That kissed all your worries away and made you hot chocolate on cold days,

Maybe she was your best friend,

The first person you wanted to call

For everything,

Or she drove you up the wall

Maybe both,

But she was always there for you and still is,

Perhaps she's been called home.

This holiday reminds you of all

The amazing memories, the joy,

The unconditional love.

But maybe you didn't.

Maybe it's complicated

And you haven't spoken for years,

Or there's tension every time

That you do get in touch.

Maybe her mind has eroded,

Stolen by age and disease

And you simply can't talk.

This holiday reminds you of what's

Not quite right.

Maybe you never even knew her,

She passed away at birth or

Had to make that unbelievable choice

To give you up,

Or she left.

Maybe you've had

A super-hero single mom,

A foster mom,

Step-mom,

Grandma for a mom,

Or an adopted mom.

Maybe you've been lucky enough to have two moms,

Love is love.

Maybe you're a mom yourself now,

And you give the kisses and make the hot chocolate.

Maybe you never wanted to be one, but you are,

Or you desperately want to be

But your body always says 'not this time'.

Maybe you're mom to precious angels,

Sweet, fur or feathered babies

Or grandchildren,

Maybe you love the ones that are forgotten and abused

Or painfully given up.

Maybe you're a teacher mom,

Or a mom to your children's friends

Always at your house.

Whatever mom looks like to you,

Whatever it means,

Know that it's ok to feel how you feel.

Because family is beautiful and irreplaceable,

Yet it's complicated too.
