When You and your Dog Are the Only Ones Who Know What the Purple Ladle is For
When I call my dog my best friend, I’m not exaggerating. My dog, Lucy, and I are so close, we don’t only make memories together, we have inside jokes and secrets as well.
Golden Isles of Georgia
Travel and dogs. These two passions of mine don’t always intersect, but when they do, magical memories are formed. Sometimes my two miniature schnauzers, both brazen barkers, are left with a pet and house sitter while we travel to far off destinations. Not only am I uncomfortable with having them on an airplane, but I sometimes believe that Heidi and Ruffles prefer to stay in the security of their own house. Leaving them is hard (for me), and I sometimes think that they are the only reasons I come home from some locations - well, that and my wallet.
Jennifer ChristiansenPublished 2 years ago in PetlifeI Told My Cat about Vocal’s Off Leash Challenge for Dogs, and She’s Pissed!
Ever since Vocal announced their Off Leash Challenge for dogs, I have been thinking about, and wondering if they would ever or have ever had a challenge specifically for cats. I didn’t tell my furry feline friend about the dog challenge right away, as I was concerned about her response. Today we had the conversation, and it went pretty much exactly as I expected it would. Below is my interview with Abigail.

We adopted a gorgeous Lil Bernedoodle puppy named Luca a few months ago, and this adorable baby turned out to be full of activity and playfulness. But, unfortunately, it caused us several troubles, the most serious of which was falling on pee and stepping on poop shortly after waking up.

When we were brand new at this game and had just started breeding our dogs, I was always surprised by the strange questions and strong beliefs of people who truly knew nothing about dog breeding whatsoever. Now, I’m not trying to sound pompous or superior in any way, but truly...this story reflects the fact that there are some people, no matter how much science, biology or plain fact obviously state otherwise, they continue to believe what they believe. “DAVE” is a perfect example in this humorous retelling of the tale.

Part I – Rusty I remember a stray dog that had been taken in by my uncle, who lived in the farmyard across the road from our yard. I am not sure of the breed of the dog but he appeared to be a mix of some sort of Collie, with a dash of Spaniel and a sprinkling of Lab plus a light touch of sinister and evil. My uncle found him in a small bluff of marsh willows out in the pasture. The dog’s foot had been injured and he was obviously starving. Uncle Harry nursed him back to health and fed him until he had regained much of his lost weight. The dog naturally became very fond of my uncle and he followed him loyally around the farm and into the barn and out in the grain fields. He became my uncle’s protector and body-guard. If anyone so much as spoke loudly to my uncle or tried to sit in his favorite chair, the dog would intervene with a bark, a menacing growl and finally a little snap with his teeth. Because of this routine, the dog was eventually named, “Nipper”. Old Nipper had the run of the farm for a couple of years and became very skilled at killing rats and chasing escaped pigs back into the outside fenced enclosure.

This was originally going to be a heartwarming tale of a dog's life past, my old best friend, and our journey together. Of course, I should know by now that my plans never work as they should and today was no exception. A new story was already unfolding as I made the preparations and headed to my office space to begin the story outline.

I saw the lanky legged colt with the fire red coat staring at me from the pasture. I was there to buy an adult horse that would be good for my experience level... which was close to zero. However, this little colt demanded my attention and I soon realized that this young, less than spectacular horse was going to be mine. I didn't care that I wouldn't be able to ride him, or that I knew nothing about training a horse; I just knew that this was my horse and I was his person. I saw myself in him... my 12 year old self often felt out of place and without purpose.
A Lifetime of Dog Years with Tommy
As always in December, Tommy’s been on my mind. I thought about him as we trimmed the tree with the pictures and dog tags of the seven dogs who've walked by our sides these last 24 years. I thought about him as we ate a tuna casserole one Sunday in December because tuna was his very favorite food, so much so that when we visit his grave we bring a can of tuna instead of flowers.
Barbara AndresPublished 2 years ago in PetlifeMy “Herb” Garden of Drugs (Cat’s Only!)
As I was sitting on a couch on my backyard patio, I noticed the bush that my family calls the “herb garden” was making a loud, rustling sound. The stems were violently moving back and forth as if something was disturbing them. The herb garden, which after many weeks of neglect, took over a significant portion of the back half of my yard and caused the rustling to be a little bit more noticeable. It emitted a strange smell of mint, lavender, and oregano mixed together but was masked by the overgrowth of my catnip plant, shooting out from all sides of the herb garden. I began to worry: What if it was a raccoon passing through, ripping and destroying the seeds I sowed, hoping to find a light snack in my prized garden. A racoon from before has already messed up my tomato plants along with leaving ripped chunks off my catnip plant to rot in the grass. Enough was enough. I looked over and saw a huge wooden stick my brother planned to use to hike with, but as of right now, it was going to be a raccoon herding stick. I grabbed the stick, held it like a katana, and walked slowly over to the bush, preparing for battle. My bare feet softly eased across the soft, green grass.
Dailey MenendezPublished 2 years ago in PetlifeI Spoke To My Dog And He Told Me He is Bilingual
My partner is Welsh, and I am Serbian. We speak English because he doesn’t speak Serbian. Yet. Sometimes being unable to speak in my native language with my spouse upsets me a lot.
Oberon Von PhillipsdorfPublished 2 years ago in PetlifeMerlin & Me
For the past several years I have been entertained by a regular visitor. He arrives faithfully each morning and I find myself expecting and looking forward to his company increasingly. What is his name? I have not a clue but I call him Merlin, he seems to like that name. Sometimes he even brings along a friend or two to keep my company as I enjoy my morning coffee and come to life.
