The Heat
The space is buzzing as I pull open the heavy glass door, unassumingly positioned next to a tourist-infested bike shop. It's called AetherHaus. No one knows how to say it. It's a German-Russian-inspired sauna-and-cold-plunge, but really, it's like a secret beehive, molded for the city's enlightened and enlighten-"ing". I enter spy mode. My go-to when I want to pass as invisible. Gathering subtle cues on how to fit into the liminal space of the front-desk area, my goal: not to be identified as the intruder I am. Quietly, I observe: shoes off here, jackets off there, speaking in intentional whispers; we say each other's names here... we look each other in the eyes here. Well, that's different. After I check in, they usher me into the next space: a co-ed change room that embodies a forward-thinking mission with steadfastness. As I step through the door, my mind hears the invisible chaperone who lives in the walls: " Listen, we don't have time for the bullshit of gender and sex. You are here to evolve. Take it or leave it. Give in or get out."
