PMDD: Catalyst to Awakening?

The Calling to Heal & Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

For the millions of women coping with symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) every month, life can feel like a never-ending challenge. One week, you’re up. Then the next three, you’re rapidly deteriorating again, becoming someone you hardly recognize. Effective treatment from the medical establishment is likely to be a long time coming for this only recently identified condition. What is currently offered often results in side-effects that compound an already debilitating condition wrecking havoc on a woman’s body and mind.

There are very few systems in place that offer true support. Those of us who experience the phenomenon (I refuse to label it anything else!) of PMDD are then left to our own devices to find relief. But this post isn’t so much about the latest promising supplement or cream as it is about embracing a paradigm shift in what is happening to us and the mental and relational challenges we face as a result.

I’m feeling utterly inspired by the idea that PMDD is actually much more than a “condition,” mental, physical or otherwise. What if… just what if, we are somehow expressing a broader, much deeper imbalance of the entire collective? What if this “dis-ease” is meant to reveal and reflect a deeper sickness in the psyche of humanity… expressed through the mysterious reproductive cycle of women and a heightened sensitivity to the evolutionary changes taking place?

Is this the wrathful warrior goddess rising up against the patriarchy, status quo, and the true insanities we have, as a species, created and accepted unquestioningly like war, poverty, and corruption? Whatever the root cause of our hormonal sensitivity… be it chemtrails, hormones in our meat and milk, GMO’s or pesticides, or something yet to be discovered… is this phenomenon here to wake us up? Are we the mirrors of a humanity gone mad screaming for acknowledgment, atonement, and healing as we move through our cycles? What if we are the ones who, in bringing healing to ourselves, clear the path for other women… and men too.

Life is truly different for women with PMDD, so it is even more imperative that we free ourselves from the boxes others live in (and want us to live in too!). It is obvious that this world is not one designed to support living with PMDD. People, women and men, are expected to function around the clock with utter predictability, often at the expense of everything natural. We are expected to behave within certain acceptable behavioral parameters. And perhaps most importantly, we are expected to hide our mental disturbances and emotional needs at all costs. It is a world in which the cards are stacked quite high against living in accordance with our true nature, and even more so for the 3-8% of women suffering from PMDD.

Is this breed of woman ushering in a new way of being and relating, by awakening us to the increasing dissonance between the earth and the human? Can we learn to honor this experience as sacred, as service? What if what we go through every month is actually a deep purging of an aching and insane humanity, an incredibly holy monthly initiation aligned with the reinstating of the divine feminine?

Maybe this is about being aware of our thoughts; changing our attitudes, how we treat ourselves, and taking all of our power back. We must cherish ourselves and hold ourselves in this light of compassion and sacred service if we are ever to live in a different world. We must decide we are warriors and not victims, even in the throes of hell. What if what we are experiencing is a sacred plea for restoration and balance? Would it not change our approach, experience, and handling of it? Maybe healing will come when we find the strength within to heal ourselves… when we grant ourselves a life that is aligned with the rhythms of nature and our own internal seasons. Maybe by acknowledging and opening ourselves to the rush of goddess energy that lies waiting to engulf us, our experience of PMDD can be transcended.

So to all you goddesses out there, whether in your wrathful or benevolent aspect, love yourself, forgive yourself, and open more and more to embody the miracle you are.
