Menopause can be a very uncomfortable transition for women.

However, some of us are forced into early menopause and most women transition in due time.

In my case, I have somewhat of a ‘medical menopause’ due to a hysterectomy.

My condition became so bad that I had no choice but to turn it around and get my health back on track.

Diseases can plague women for years as they struggle with the excruciatingly painful period symptoms most of their life.

For example, I suffered from endometriosis from the moment I got my period — which escalated to a couple of other dreadful conditions.

It’s not an easy decision to take; neither is HRT medication. Some women will suffer a whole lot more than others.

Scientists don't know why some women naturally experience many side effects, and they can be embarrassing and isolating simultaneously.

Imagine being in a male-dominated industry and hiding your symptoms.

One woman in our office was crazy about her desk fan.

No one could touch it, yet one of the males on our team loved to give her a hard time and moved it slightly to irritate her.

That didn't go down too well, and she wasn't impressed.

I had to explain to him, that this was one way for her to cope with hot flushes. Air can give one relief in a stuffy and somewhat crammed office.

Next thing I see him with a fan of his own which he named 'manopause fan.' We could see the humor in the situation, but pointing these things out to a woman can be dangerous!

He did his best to water down the situation with humour.

During those tough times when women's irritation, anxiety and depression start to take over, we can look forward towards a straightforward technique to ease the burden.

Life is supposed to be lived in abundance, but hormones can sometimes make it unbearable.

To discover a way to ease menopausal symptoms naturally, the researchers conducted this study below.

This study was conducted with 1,744 women between the ages of 40 and 65. They all received care at the Mayo Clinic in 2015 and 2016.

Participants were given questionnaires to complete, which rated their menopausal symptoms, stress levels and mindfulness.

Results showed that women with a higher level of mindfulness had fewer menopausal symptoms.

The higher a woman’s perceived stress level, the greater the link between higher mindfulness and reduced menopausal symptoms.

A surprising discovery uncovered that higher mindfulness was not associated with lower hot flashes and night sweats symptom scores.

One reason may be that the amount of distress a woman experiences from night sweats and hot flashes may have more to do with an individual’s personality traits than the actual symptoms.

How to practice mindfulness

The first step towards practising mindfulness is to realise that about 99 per cent of the time, we run on autopilot.

You are becoming aware of what’s going on in your mind. So there isn’t a need to wipe the slate clean of everything — to be aware of what’s happening.

Start to be an observer of your emotions, feelings and the scenarios that you are thinking about.

Then create a ‘pause’ as in stopping what you are doing.

Take a deep breath and look around amongst the space around you. Don’t judge; let it all come and go as it will.

Awareness, pausing, and breathing will lower your stress levels, which can significantly impact your symptoms and help you draw clarity when a situation you face becomes overwhelming.

We can all benefit from this mindfulness practice — it only takes a few seconds to stop and reflect.

So next time you feel stressed, overwhelmed or confused, try mindful awareness and breathing to calm your mind and gain some clarity.
