Intoxication pounces like sirens upon their prey. They attract, trap, and pull into a dreadful world that has no end. The world seems pleasing and yet a terrible scare to its extent. And while intoxication occurs usually from toxic substances, it can even arrive from a healthy source. For example, eat kilos of apples at once and see how this bliss turns into betrayal. Similarly, where technology, especially digital devices, was meant to help humankind, it is now leashing its users and becoming toxic for them.

In today's fast-paced digital world, it's easy to become overwhelmed and lost in the constant barrage of information and distractions. This is what ‘digital intoxication’ is: a state of being addicted to digital devices and the internet. You might feel that you are in control, but you are not. If you realize the pull, be proud for passing the first step. Now, read this article to learn about what to do next.

Recognize the problem

The first step in dealing with digital intoxication is recognizing that you have a problem. In fact, it is the first step in dealing with any problem in the world. If you find yourself spending more time on your phone or computer than you intend to, then it is time to take action. A few symptoms of overuse include

• feeling anxious or irritable when you're away from your digital devices,

• not knowing what to do in your free time

• feeling bored easily

• Needing stimulus every time

If you feel any of these things to be overtaking your life, then it's time to take action.

Set boundaries

One of the most effective ways to deal with digital intoxication is to set boundaries for yourself. Decide on specific times of day when you will use your digital devices, and stick to those times. And when I say, stick to it. If you try to be flexible, you will quickly slip into it again. Also, avoid using your phone or computer in bed or during meals. This not only disrupts your sleep and eating habits, which is dangerous in itself, but it also makes you addicted. Make sure to take breaks from your devices throughout the day and engage in other activities. Try fun and healthy activities such as reading, exercise, playing sports, swimming, or spending time with your loved ones. Look for quality sporting goods and set yourself free on the field. It is a good initial step.

Use apps and tools

They say that diamond cuts a diamond; we say that digital apps can help you overcome your addiction to the digital environment. There are many apps and tools available that can help you manage your digital use. For example, you can use a website blocker to limit your time on social media or other distracting websites.

You can also use apps that track your digital usage and provide you with insights into your habits. YourHour is another excellent application that lets you know if you are going overboard or not. These tools can help you become more aware of your digital behaviors and make changes where necessary.

Practice Mindfulness

This is like being meditative throughout your life and not only at certain points in time. Practicing mindfulness lets you become conscious of your decisions. It can simply be helpful in dealing with digital intoxication. Mindfulness involves being present and aware of the present moment, without judgment. When you're using your digital devices, try to be mindful of your behavior and how it's affecting you. If you notice yourself becoming stressed or overwhelmed, know that you’ve caught yourself. It’s a good thing. Now, it is time to calm this restlessness by practicing some meditation.

Social support

Finally, reach out to friends or family members who can offer support and encouragement as you work to change your digital habits. Consider joining a support group or seeking the guidance of a mental health professional if you're struggling to make changes on your own.

Know that digital intoxication might seem like nothing, but it is a brutal thing that can mess up your peace and toss you up into tangled threads of anxiety. The sooner you deal with it, the better.
