Everyone Wants Happiness

A universal desire in various disguises

By Rebecca SharrockPublished 7 years ago 3 min read

In life, we all seem to desire our own individual things. It may be about money, family, romance, friendships, anything to do with ourselves physically, or an ideal career. However, everything mentioned above comes down to us all desiring the exact same thing. Which is happiness.

As just mentioned, our desire for happiness takes many disguises. We may even find ourselves longing for several or all of what was given above. Yet as this written piece can only be so long, I’ll mention two of the most common things we often wish for:

  1. Our physical appearance.
  2. Attaining more money.

Physical Appearance

Worrying about our physical appearance could be us wanting better (in our own opinion) looks, wanting (unnecessarily) to lose or gain weight, or desiring more strength and fitness to be used in competitive sports. Whenever we feel uncomfortable about our body it comes down to us wanting to fit in, and to have our peers accept us.

Unfortunately, our physical body is the easiest part of our life to be judged upon and/or discriminated. This is due to our appearance being the most visible to the outside world. People who pick on others due to the amount of physical strength they have, or because they don’t have the looks in which they idolise, are shallow people who can not see anything beyond what is visible to them.

In truth, our physical characteristics mean absolutely nothing in regards to our happiness and quality of life. All that can get in the way is our natural tendency to take our peers’ criticism on board and to thus feel like we’re unworthy of being socially accepted. However, there are well over seven billion people in this world, and every individual person has their own opinion of what they like and don’t like. This means that each and every one of us will come across people who don’t like the way that we look. Also, in regards to happiness, nothing we ever get told by another person is guaranteed to make us happy. The only times when we’ll feel happy about another person’s compliment is if we genuinely believe that inside ourselves. So the truth is that it would make absolutely no difference if we were never given an outside compliment at all. A good self-esteem has to come solely from within ourselves.

Attaining More Money

The second most common desire amongst us all is about attaining more money. This stems down to us wanting to be more secure, believing that happiness will come along when we’re able to shower ourselves with luxuries, and it can also be about us wanting social acceptance.

It is true that money enables us to buy things that will make us feel happy. Yet happiness from buying ourselves luxury products only works to a point. Things that we truly need such as a roof to live under is a different story. However when it comes to luxuries, the happiness we receive is very much a flash-in-the-pan kind of experience. Once it’s ended, the novelty has worn off, or when it has served it’s purpose the happiness from it disappears.

Also, even the wealthiest person only has a limited amount of money. However there is one place where eternal happiness and the feeling of having all the riches of the world can come to us, if only we work very hard at finding and maintaining it. We take our own mind for granted so many times. But it’s the window to our entire life and experiences. Only our mind can enable us to enjoy anything (including all of the things that money brings along). Once we locate the key to our happiness from within, it will be eternal and will never be able to be damaged or taken away from us. The words “success” and “failure” in truth mean nothing at all. In life we must strive for fulfilment rather than success. Most of the world’s happiest people do not have a heap of money.
