Incubators, accelerators, and coworking spaces are three popular terms in the startup community. All of these options are advantageous for the growth of a new business. All of them have advantages and disadvantages that you should weigh carefully based on your specific situation. So, what's the difference between them, and which should you go with?

Incubators are ideal for new startups because they foster new ideas. They typically work without a set schedule and focus on mentoring and assisting with the launch of the business. To join the incubator, you must first apply for the programme, which typically lasts a year.

Incubators help your business grow, provide a decent workplace, and allow you to network with other entrepreneurs. They are typically industry-specific and can add a scientific component to your idea.

Some incubators are located at universities, giving you access to more research opportunities. You can also use scientific equipment in those areas. They do not, however, always provide funding. Furthermore, not all incubators require equity. They sometimes lack interdisciplinary collaboration because they are industry-specific.

In exchange for equity, accelerators provide services. They also have programmes for which you should apply. Please keep in mind that you will face stiff competition, as only about 2% of applications are accepted. Such programmes are typically intensive and brief. Nonetheless, they will ensure your company's rapid growth.

These programmes will be more beneficial to those who have already launched their businesses but want to establish a network and attract capital investments. Accelerators work on a set schedule, providing mentorship and expecting results within a specific time frame. They provide seed funding, workspace, intensive mentorship, and networking opportunities. They will also coach you on how to quickly grow your business.

Coworking spaces are places that offer a workspace at a reasonable cost. They also provide shared office space and maintain a high level of security. You can do creative work here on your own or with your team, no matter how big or small. You can also collaborate with other creators who are working alongside you. Coworking spaces do not provide seed funding, but they also do not require your equity.

Choose the Best Location for Your Startup

If you want, you can use all three types at different stages of your startup's development. Choosing only one path would be a mistake. Consider the following factors when deciding where to begin:

The stage of development of your startup. Use the incubator if you've just started but haven't yet launched your company. Accelerators, on the other hand, can be more useful if you are more interested in attracting investors and building partnerships.

Your specifications. Accelerators will assist you if you desperately need investments. They will also provide you with access to their alumni network, where you will be able to form strong partnerships. However, they will require a portion of your equity.

Your intentions and expectations. If you need a flexible creative space to put your creative ideas into action, coworking spaces may be a good option. You can also find partners and other service providers who can assist you here.

There are some pitfalls to avoid during the decision-making process as well. The first is the belief that there is a single "success recipe" for every startup. It's not true; instead, you should discover it for yourself. Accelerators and incubators can be beneficial to your startup. However, when selecting one, conduct research on the alumni of the programme of interest and think outside the box.

You should also consider whether a portion of your equity is required. You might be able to find investors on your own without losing money. Locations in specific industries can be extremely competitive. Furthermore, low collaboration between multidisciplinary creators is possible.

Keep the focus on your startup and outsource the administrative burden to experts, whether you choose a coworking space, an accelerator, or an incubator. Each of the three options has advantages, so choose the one that is best for you!
