Excited

“This is so exciting, Gloria. You’re going to be seen by millions of people today.”

“Millions?”

“Yes, this is one of the most popular fashion shows in the world.”

“You mean I can become a star overnight?”

“It can happen. A person can go viral with just one appearance on YouTube or TikTok.”

“Virus? Well, I don’t plan on kissing anybody, so I don’t think I’m gonna be getting sick or anything.”

“Not virus—viral. Meaning your portion of the show catches on everywhere and for a few weeks everybody talks about you.”

“Oh, can I make money?”

“The potential is there.”

“Well, then I’ll kiss whoever I have to in order to go viral.”

Gloria and Debbie chuckled together.

“You got lucky, Gloria. What were the chances that you would be waiting in line at the Walmart bathroom next to Oliver Olivier?”

“I never heard of him before that day.”

“He’s a major fashion designer. All the biggest stars wear his clothes. He’s the producer and star of Fashion Week, the podcast you’re appearing in.”

“Pot cast? I’m not smoking any of that stuff.”

“No, podcast. P-O-D cast. It’s like a television show.”

The Ride to the Fashion Show

“Gloria, your Uber ride is here.”

“Can you come back here? I need help getting my shoes on.”

Debbie assisted Gloria with her shoes and then took her out to the car.

“You have a lovely car, driver,” Gloria said.

“The name is Hector, ma’am. Thank you, it’s a hybrid.”

“Well, how did we get from talking about cars to crossbreeding animals? This isn’t Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.”

“Oh no, ma’am. My car is a hybrid. It has both a gasoline engine and an electric engine. If the battery-powered engine runs out, it automatically switches over to gas.”

“We’re in for an 85-minute drive. Do you mind if I play some music from my Spotify playlist?”

“Go ahead,” Gloria responded.

Hector turned the volume up and sang along to the song: “Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes…”

Gloria abruptly interrupted. “Oh no! I hate the Carpenters. Please change it.”

“But Karen Carpenter is such a great singer,” Debbie interjected.

“Great singer, my finger. Give me some BOC.”

“BOC? What is that?” Hector asked.

“Blue Öyster Cult,” Gloria said, then belted out: “Oh no, there goes Tokyo. Go go Godzilla, yeah. Now that’s music.”

The Icon Performing Arts Center

“Here we are at the beautiful Icon Performing Arts Center,” Hector commented. “It has a 6,000-seat capacity.”

“6,000 seats? I was told more than 2 million people would be watching.”

“Yes, that would be through streaming sites such as Hulu and Spotify,” Debbie explained.

Hector assisted Gloria out of his car. “Thank you, Miss Gloria and Debbie, for riding with me today. I hope you have a wonderful time.”

Entering the Theater and Meeting the Director

“We’re supposed to enter through the stage door at the back of the theater,” Debbie said while pushing Gloria’s wheelchair.

“Greetings. You must be Gloria Cupidon. My name is Dyna,” said a short, pixieish middle-aged lady.

“Yes, I am Gloria, and this is my caregiver Debbie,” Gloria responded in a stately tone.

Dyna smiled. “You’re one of the models. Jason Pooper has been waiting for you.”

“Pooper,” Gloria giggled.

“Yes, his name is Pooper. He’s the director of today’s show. He’s very sensitive about people making fun of his name.”

“Oh, okay. Well, I’ll try not to laugh when I meet him.”

“Miss Cupidon, I hope you can be respectful.”

“Yes, I’ll do my best,” Gloria said, hiding a giggle.

Dyna ushered Gloria and Debbie to the models’ dressing area.

“Jason, please meet Gloria Cupidon.”

“Greetings, Miss Cupidon. It’s so nice to meet you.”

“Nice meeting you, Poopsie.”

The entire room went silent. All eyes turned to Gloria and Jason.

Jason’s face grew red and for a moment his nostrils flared. Then he eased up and laughed. “You can call me Super Pooper if you wish.”

Both Gloria and Jason laughed.

“How about Super Dooper Pooper?” Gloria replied. Then, with another chuckle, she said, “I’ll just call you Jason.”

“Okay, Miss Cupidon, first thing is you’ll be riding on this motorized wheelchair, as your caregiver won’t be onstage with you.”

“Well, that’s a beautiful shiny wheelchair.”

“Are you capable of operating it? If not, Dyna can show you.”

“What do you think I am, some blockhead that doesn’t know anything? Back in my day I was designing stuff like that wheelchair.”

“Okay, well, that’s settled. Let’s move on to wardrobe.”

They walked over to a rack with several gowns and outfits.

“Oh, so many beautiful gowns. Oliver Olivier designed all these?” Debbie asked.

“Yes, he’s a fashion genius,” Jason commented, pulling two outfits off the rack—one gown and one blouse-and-pants ensemble. “These are your outfits, Gloria.”

Gloria’s eyes grew wide. “Can’t I wear something that shows off my figure a little more? Maybe something see-through. I mean, Madonna can run around in her underwear. Why can’t I?”

Debbie leaned toward her and whispered out of the side of her mouth. “Gloria, you wear Depends. I don’t think you want to show that off to the world.”

“Hush up, Debbie.”

“I don’t think I want to wear these potato sacks, Jason. I’m going to have to bow out.”

“Miss Cupidon, you signed a contract and were paid $12,000 to do the show.”

“Well, I’ll give the money back.”

“It’s not that easy. Your contract states you’ll be penalized $20,000 for breaking it.”

“Okay, I’ll do it. But can’t we make these outfits a little more slinky and sassy?”

“Miss Cupidon, you are representing our Plus Size and Elderly Handicapped women’s lines. These styles are stately, and the materials are top of the line.”

“Plus size? Did he say plus size, Debbie?”
