A Night To Remember
A light rain fell as Ben pulled into the parking lot of Bella’s; the small Italian place gave off a stunning glow in the early evening light. Beads of sweat formed on Ben’s forehead as his beta male brain imagined all the various ways tonight could go wrong. It had been so long since he had been out with a woman and just knew he would screw things up before the night ended. Liz, a coworker from the accounting firm he worked for, had been trying to set him up for years and finally had succeeded. He was to meet Mary, a newer employee from the office, at Seven this evening for dinner. He was twenty minutes early like he always was, a beta male habit formed from a desperate need to please people. He looked himself over one last time in his rear-view mirror before summoning up the courage to make his way inside. He thought to himself that he looked like a bird as he examined his tall lanky frame hunched over to reach the mirror, his long thin nose pulling the look together. Through the bright colors of his favorite sweater, he could almost make out feathered wings.

You Had Me at Merlot
It was a beautiful spring afternoon. Karen sat at her desk in her office sending off her last report for the week. She took a deep breath and sighed. “Thank god it’s Friday!” She said aloud. Her cat Morris meowed, as if responding to her statement. It felt good to be done with her work week and have the weekend ahead of her, but deep down there was some disappointment. It was going to be her typical weekend that had been on a constant repeat for the last 10 months. Karen was single and lived alone with her cat, Morris, in an apartment just outside of San Francisco. She had dabbled in online dating with no luck and was starting to feel like there were no good available men in her area. Yes, she had met people and gone on a few dates, but all terrible experiences.

Dream Date
Single mother focused on goals and ambitions not just for myself, but for my children as well. It was little to no time to explore romantic friendships. Out of the blue comes this strange but interesting individual who sparked a conversation about absolutely nothing. It was alarming, because as strange as the conversation was, at that moment, got me out of my head and away from my mental desk. Anyone that knows me knows that’s not an easy task. I couldn’t help but wonder what provoked this striking but unique individual to engage in a mask conversation. As short as the conversation was, it still left a footprint. So much so, prior to us going our separate direction he asks if I would entertain him in another conversation by phone. Again, such a unique way to ask someone for their telephone number I felt compelled to oblige. We exchanged numbers and this is where the adventure truly began.

Un Sueno en Rojo. Top Story - April 2021.
Grace lounged on her plush crimson sofa. She absently ate cherries from a bowl on her coffee table, relishing the last fruits of the season. The dark red juices left sweet traces on her full lips as she twirled a stem between her thumb and her forefinger. Her gaze fixed upon the white canvas on the easel in the middle of the room, the easel’s thin wooden legs dividing the room into unequal parts, like the way her mind felt divided and separated and pulled apart.

Clarity
She wore ill-fitting navy-blue flats, the shoes she wore to church with her parents. She hated them, but they were the only shoes that looked marginally okay with her outfit, which she hoped looked casual, like she hadn’t thought about it too much. Like she went on dates all the time. She thought about wearing her gold sandals; she loved the way they made her feet look like a more mature version of themselves, but she didn’t want to look too dressed up, too invested, as though she thought they were going to a red carpet event. Trey would probably be wearing shorts--that’s how boys were.

Wine & Spirits
A FEW GLASSES OF MERLOT, I PLOPPED MY DERRIERE ON MY MOTHER'S COUCH. BEING 27 YEARS OLD AND BACK HOME AGAIN WAS NOT IDEAL AND I WAS CRAVING A CHANGE. A 9-5 AT WAWAS CONVIENCE STORE WAS NOT CUTTING IT FINANCIALLY. SO, I SCROLLED ON MY CELL PHONE BROWSING SITES. AFTER A FEW GLASSES OF MERLOT, WITH FIMILAR SPIRITS ENTERING ME, I STARTED TO FEEL INVICINCIBLE WITH SUPER HERO CAPABILITIES. IT WAS ME AGAINST MY WORLD AND I WAS READY TO DOMINATE THE NIGHT AND GET MY FINGERS ON A FEW GRAND.

Little Blackbird
Beneath her heavy lashes, she shyly watched him twirl his spaghetti alla puttanesca on the elegant fork. The seductive sounds of evening jazz, murmuring conversation and the occasional clink of silverware enveloped her senses. It had been eons since she had been on a date, and this evening so far had been terrifyingly surreal.

Something About Her
I've been on a lot of dates. Too many, to be real with you, but it's hard for a brother out here. 'Dating While Regular' is what me and my boys call it and it's bad. DWG doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't exceptional at whatever your lane is; it just means that without the fancy leased cars, the flash of cash and the spoils of luxury to offer, your ass is regular. I am a 32 year old good looking Black man: physically fit, financially stable, with good credit, a relationship with God, I own my own business and I love my mama. The only women I seem to end up dating are in it for a chance at being a Bravo Housewife hit or a sugar baby. For me, dating isn't for entertainment. I know that I am good catch but I am still waiting to meet my wife.
