Twist of Fate
The light squeak of the corkscrew seemed to echo through the empty kitchen. Georgia’s left hand stabilized the bottle of Merlot while she slowly cranked the top with her right, watching as the arms rose to the top in accolade of the process. Placing a hand on each of the raised arms, she slowly lowered them and watched as the cork raised up and out of the bottle. With a soft ‘pop’ she pulled upwards and relieved the bottle of its oppressor. She glanced again at the clock that read 7:30 PM. Forty-five minutes late, with a sigh she rolled her eyes and grabbed a large wine glass.

The Dinner Cruise
Jeff watched her walk down the steel gangplank, her shoes tapping hard as if she was in a rush. She slipped a little as she stepped off the end. He wondered at a woman who would wear high heels on a dinner cruise. Not just because of the damage to the decks, but the rocking if the waves got a little rough out on the bay. Clearly, she had overdressed.

Joneee, Mis-tique and the Magical Merlot
“Take us uptown.” We told the taxi driver to take us from our Atlantic City hotel jobs to a low slung building that hugged the earth like a crab. We had to get out of there. I could feel the heartbeat of the music as we pulled up, “boom, ta-boom, boom, boom, ta-boom.” It ripped through my body and triggered that all too familiar, dangerous anticipation.

The Breck Girl in the Silver Frame
“OK. You know my secret. I wear your underwear.” This November 1983 L.A. Weekly personal ad said it all. Clarice spun her Rolls Royce out of the circular driveway into the Bel Air neighborhood. She waved to her husband, hoping he would return his attention to gardening. His muddied knees were littered with the remains of his hobby, their rose bushes.

The Right One
I didn’t want to go. At least I didn’t want to go alone. It was one of those quick dating deals where you meet each guy for five minutes. I was thirty-five and thrust back into the dating system after the guy I thought was the “one” told me he had found his soul mate. I kept wondering why I wasn’t the soul mate—what made someone else better than me? I just wanted to stay at home in cozy pajamas on the couch watching Dateline and sipping a good glass of merlot.

Nirvana is in the Merlot
I was walking along the dreary Melbourne street. It was a typical spring night and the sounds of the city buzzed and hummed around me, all familiar noises, yet something about tonight made them sound different. There was a new shine to the streetlights, a sweeter scent in the air, and the normally muted colours seemed brighter. I’d walked this street more times than I could count, however never in anticipation of a date. Maybe that was why everything looked better.
