Prepare Traditional Hyderabad Fish Biryani

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg fish (any firm-fleshed variety)
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup yogurt or curd
  • 1/4 cup ghee
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 green chillies, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 cup mint leaves, chopped
  • 1/2 cup coriander leaves, chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup fried onions
  • 1/4 cup fried cashew nuts
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 2 tablespoons saffron strands, soaked in 2 tablespoons of warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons rose water

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the fish with 1/2 cup yogurt, 1/2 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste, 1/2 teaspoon garam masala, 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder, and salt, to taste. Keep aside for at least an hour.
  2. Heat ghee and oil in a large pot. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and chopped green chillies. Sauté for a few minutes.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and sauté until soft.
  5. Add coriander powder, garam masala, cumin powder, red chilli powder, and turmeric powder. Sauté for a few minutes.
  6. Add marinated fish and sauté for 5 minutes.
  7. Add 2 cups of basmati rice and sauté for 2 minutes.
  8. Add 4 cups of water, mint leaves, and coriander leaves.
  9. Cover and cook on low heat for 10 minutes.
  10. Add lemon juice, fried onions, fried cashew nuts, raisins, saffron water, and rose water.
  11. Cover and cook on low heat for 10 minutes.

Serve hot with raita. Enjoy!
