A Spoonful of Bitterness, Warmth and Comfort. Top Story - October 2023.
If Rosie finally committed to her promise to leave work on time, she wouldn't be rushing to the nearest station to catch her train back home. She wouldn't be stuck standing with her face inches away from the automated doors. She wouldn't end up drenched when rain suddenly started pouring down hard.

My Go-To Dessert
My Go-To Dessert Peppermint Pudding With the crisp Peppermint chocolate and sweet caramel and cream, I can’t think of a better combination. This dessert is super easy to make and affordable, and is perfect for any occasion. I’ve been making it since I was 12 years old and am still making the exact recipe 17 years later.

Chicken Parm and Chick Flicks. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
So, my wife of sixteen years and I met in college. She was a cute little brunette Accounting major by the name of Anna. We had started dating in the fall before, but now it was February, and readily approaching was our first Valentine's Day together as a couple. For me, it was not really that big of a deal, but for her? She had just casually informed me that I was her first ever boyfriend, her first actual relationship.

The Cat from Outer Space brought Chicken and Dumplings
BANG! Tires squeal as my Mom jerks the steering wheel of our Ford pick-up, left and right. I flop around in my seat like a ragdoll, the seatbelt doing little to hold me in place as the vehicle comes to a stop. I blink and push myself upright as my head throbs and my knee aches. I look at my Mom. She leans against the door and laboring to catch her breath.

Alfredo bratwurst
I first had this bizarre and particular dish in the midst of a Depressive stage. My stepfather, a man who fluctuates from easygoing and fun to be around, to hackle raising and stressful, made this after drinking several tall cans of Mike’s Twisted Tea. I usually hate being around him when he drinks, as he targets me and berates me for random reasons throughout the night. But tonight, he was tolerable to be around.

A Meal For a Queen. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
I was in my 36th year of life and had returned to college to finish up the university degree that had been interrupted by a pregnancy and marriage while I was in my teens. My children were now teenagers and I felt I could finally put some effort towards bettering myself. It wasn’t an easy decision. I was married to an extremely jealous man who had clearly demonstrated that neither me nor the children were safe when his rage overtook him. This had led to my developing coping skills over time, skills that had very little to do with who I was an individual and much to do with keeping us all safe. I didn’t like the person I had become and I missed the one I had been as a child. I knew I could not continue living like I was. Returning to college was the first step in a journey to reclaim my self.

A Gift For Friends And Family
This was an easy choice for the first-anniversary memorial of my mother's death. Family will often give away the deceased person's belongings and everyone knew my mother was an excellent cook and baker. There were always a lot of comments about her pies.

Grandma's Healing Recipe: Chicken and Dumplings for the Soul
In the darkest of moments, when life seemed to have thrown all its chaos at me, I received a comforting dish that not only nourished my body but also my soul. It was a dish that my grandmother, a woman of incredible strength and warmth, used to prepare – her famous Chicken and Dumplings.

Family Favourite Christmas Cookies
I don't remember exactly what year the 12 Cookies of Christmas tradition began, but I do remember what kicked it off. We still got our provincial newspaper every day at the time, and one day in November there was an insert tucked in between the folds. This insert was filled with recipes and pictures of beautifully decorated Christmas cookies, and my dad took it and ran with it. Determined to make 12 kinds of cookies for our family before the holidays were over, he pulled both from that newspaper insert and from the various recipes he had collected over the years. As far bake as I can remember, my dad has loved to bake things and loved Christmas. This challenge that blended the two was perfect for him. Since I also loved Christmas and loved to help him bake, I guess it was perfect for me too.
