Young Girls Shouldn't Sing That
Note: This is my contribution to a challenge posed by Phil Flannery on the VSS page. His prompt: "I have written this as a challenge for the Vocal Social Society. Feel free to share the songs that you loved as a child but were unaware of their meaning until much later."

Full Moon Fever
When I met Ashley, I knew it wouldn't last, and definitely not if she found out what I was. She let me know I was "Mr. Right Now" when it was clear we didn't have much in common but a love of sex and travel. I had money, and we could go to all the places she ever wanted to see. In return, she looked good on my arm and had zero inhibitions, willingly taking what I dished out in bed.

Pillows of Love
It was 2011, the day after my husband’s burial. The exhausting run of hospital visits, sleepless nights, hospice, and the random sandwich in a knotted stomach was over...for now. There was so much sadness, guilt, and worry that I wasn’t sure if I could bear it. There was the stress of making arrangements and stifling my grief while contending with scheduling and finances. A father and a stepdad who could not be in the same room for longer than a few minutes. Corralling my hubby’s family and updating friends. I was nothing short of a hot mess.

Separating the Art From the ArtistTop Story - October 2023
Recently, Jann Wenner, the co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation member, released a book entitled “The Masters”. This book featured his interviews with rock legends who have become his friends. There is no arguing the influence the subjects of this book have had on Rock music. However, when questioned why there were no Blacks or women, his flippant, obnoxious, and frankly stupid response negated two demographics of rock 'n' roll's history as if they did not matter. He took his experience, privilege, and influence to brush off legends - whether he chose to acknowledge them or not - that built his career. It was an unfortunate reminder of how someone we hold in high regard can disappoint us in such a poignant and profound way.

Two Stars
Ben looked over at his nephew Tony through his helmet. Their eyes met. This had been their dream come true. Ben, an astronaut, had been on a few space explorations, and his biggest fan was his nephew Tony. Tony was determined to be an astronaut like his uncle, eventually becoming the youngest to graduate from the astronaut program. They often talked about traveling through space together.

Blood and the Lightning Bolt
The monster was doing its best to make Evan scream. It broke his legs, which elicited the faintest gasp. Evan remained silent during the beating and the nail extractions, which he thought was a nice twist. He actually enjoyed the sharp sting that raced from his toes to the back of his jaw like sour candy with each pop off the nail bed.
