Best Investigative Journalism Movies
Journalism isn't just about good writing. Arguably, it's barely about good writing at all—though that is an important part of it (I mean, even the most fascinating stories can be ruined by bad writing). But one of the most important tenets of journalism is truth. Sometimes, that's as easy as reporting the facts in front of you. But sometimes, the search for truth leads journalists to dark, perilous, or simply shocking information.

Claudia JerroPublished 6 years ago in CriminalBest Drug Cartel Movies
Every year or so, a film is released showcasing the varied aspects of either one or several highly lethal narcotics and its burgeoning enterprise. Films like these tend to center upon the kingpin or warlord whose enterprise is either on the rise, in major jeopardy from cops and rival smuggling rings, or both. While some of them may illustrate real life human issues, like addiction, suicide, and injustice, the best drug cartel movies also offer a glimpse into an underworld that thrives under our very noses and infests our country with poisonous toxins for not only profit, but revolution. Many of us tend to forget that these international cartels, gun running rings, and terrorist organizations all work together to bolster their various schemes across the world; respectively, illegal drug trafficking, increased dangerous weapons on the streets, and simply worldwide fear.

Kelsey LangePublished 6 years ago in CriminalYou Don’t Know Whether You are Coming or Going in 'Roman J. Israel'
When I saw the preview for Roman J. Israel, I wondered how I had missed this real life Civil Rights lawyer from the front lines of early 70s injustice. I eventually learned the esquire was a fictional character, and despite the outdated fro and retrograde wardrobe, the setting was present day. Even so, the trailer tidbits and performance prove Denzel can still obviously bring it, but no amount of chops, can save all the back and forth this film subjects you to.
Rich MonettiPublished 6 years ago in CriminalWhy I Think Everyone Should Watch 'Natural Born Killers'
Oliver Stone is a director who has never shied away from politics and controversy. He has shown this with movies like JFK, Nixon and Snowden. His most political and controversial movie to date is arguably Natural Born Killers, released in 1994, starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis. The movie was controversial for a number of reasons, including its extreme scenes of violence and because of accusations it of inspiring real life crimes, including the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. However many critics and movie-goers don't discuss the most important part of any story: the message. Oliver Stone has looked at our past with movies like JFK, but at the time of Natural Born Killers release, he was looking into our future, and where we seem to be now. The movie wasn't about the gore, violence, sex or death. Natural Born Killers was looking at our society and the one of the most important aspects of our society, the media. The way Oliver Stone portrayed the media and the sensationalism our society gives it was real and beyond chilling.

James FangsPublished 6 years ago in Criminal Lifetime Review: '16 and Missing'
Oh, Ashley Scott, it seems you can hardly catch a break when it comes to Lifetime movies. Before being cast in the schlock that was Fatal Defense, you were in this MarVista-made "thriller" where you had to deal with both a psychotic ephebophile and—even worse—a 16-year-old daughter!
Trevor WellsPublished 6 years ago in CriminalThe Godfather
The Godfather is Francis Ford Coppola’s opus magnum. Praised by many critics to be one of the greatest films ever put to the screen, no film can create such an evocation of pure emotion, not just from the people in the seats of the audience, but the actors who were on the screen. The writing is true to the characters, the scenery and lighting is almost perfect in every scene, and the even the gore and grit are all masterfully put together to create what is seen as nothing less than a masterpiece of entertainment.
