"Little Numbers," Big Excitement: Getting Cozy with BOY at the TLA (Concert Review)
You know how sometimes you hear a song and immediately it reminds you of a certain event in your life? Maybe it reminds you of meeting an old flame. Or of your eighth grade semi-formal. Or of a particularly debaucherous sorority party in college. For me, whenever I hear the irresistibly catchy indie-pop song from BOY, "Little Numbers," I immediately get flashbacks to October of 2013. That's when I saw one of my favorite and most unique live shows I've ever witnessed at the Theatre of the Living Arts (TLA) in Philadelphia. That's when BOY was headlining for an especially cozy and comfortable concert at the TLA in Philly.
Ashley Hans: Philly Music VocalizerPublished 2 years ago in Beat5 Tips for Up-And-Coming Rappers
I've spent roughly a decade booking and performing hip-hop shows. Before that, I was playing live in punk, ska and metal bands. I've thrown incalculable amounts of energy and money into putting on fun, memorable events. I've celebrated successful turnouts and I've beaten myself up over failed projects that were doomed from the start. Ups and downs are inevitable. If you want to build a successful career as an independent artist you should never stop learning. There's always something that you don't know and there's always ways to reinvent your brand and evolve as an entertainer. Here's 5 key points that are consistently overlooked.
Kyle PerryPublished 2 years ago in BeatM J The Musical
"M J The Musical" "The Price for Fame" "M J The Musical" at the Neil Simon Theatre is not only the great music that Michael Jackson wrote and performed, but it also goes deeper than that in many ways. Lynn Nottage (Clyde's, Intimate Apparel) who wrote the book for the show brings forth at how the man was a perfectionist, how he saw the notes that segway eventually into the music, he could even tell his musicians just how to improve upon the melodies being played. Like Prince and James Brown, he was very demanding of his musicians and backing dancers; yet he was never forceful nor dismissive. Growing up with eight siblings in Gary, Indiana, his father, here played by Quentin Earl Darrington (he also doubled as Jackson's stage manager) was a tough man. Joseph Jackson made his sons practice all the time leaving very little personal time for each of the then Jackson Five. Michael, who was a very sensitive boy as Nottage points out, would carry many of these memories well into adulthood.

Mariana SmithPublished 2 years ago in BeatThis Old Man Finally Saw His First Real Concert
Well, as the title suggests, this old man finally saw his first real concert after 35 years. Why do I say first real concert? I say this because, on November 21st, I finally got to go to a concert for a band that I love. That band is Alien Weaponry.

Thursday 13th February 2020: Before the first wave swept across the UK, I managed to fit a trip across to Manchester for a concert. I got to see Bowling for Soup for the 3rd time, supported by Simple Plan. It was a good gig, and getting back to Manchester after a year or so away was very enjoyable. My brother and I have been to numerous musical events, both as spectators and staff, and will be planning to go to many more in the future.

This story isn't just about a concert. This is a story about destiny. Let me set the scene. Blaring music, sweaty bodies, screaming at the top of our lungs, hands and phones in the air. This was what my Thursday night consisted of as I experienced my first ever concert in New York City.

It's been approximately five days since battle raps Super Bowl happened, of course I'm referencing Ultimate Rap league's Summer Madness. It is the 11th year of the event. It went down this year in Houston, Texas, and thousands of fans showed up for the event. As a veteran spectator of battle rap, it felt good to see the fans back outside and in the element of the sport. Whether they were their for certain battles, certain battle rappers, first time spectators, or if they were their just to check it out, it was an amazing thing to see.
