Music is something that has been a part of my life since before I was born. My parents were so heavily immersed in the Heavy Metal scene, they were sure I would be holding up those horns as soon as I opened my eyes. While it didn't happen quite that quick, I made my way to the "dark side" if you will. I have been attending concerts in general since I was 13 years old. They quickly became my safe haven. As I got older my music taste progressed and I started going to shows with harder crowds and faster riffs, and I enjoyed it all the same if not more. If you want to see the real me, you'll have to meet me at the barricade.
“It's twelve noon in London, seven AM in Philadelphia, and around the world it's time for Live Aid.”
Nostalgia(n): a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. We feel nostalgia when something interacts with our senses and acts as a recall point for a memory bathed in the rosy glow of happiness. When we smell something that reminds us of happy times, see a visual or even hear an old song or movie associated with that memory. It is not uncommon for nostalgia to hit people at any moment during the course of your life.

Bon Scott, born Ronald Belford Scott, is one of Perth’s claims to fame. He was by all accounts a raucous party animal with the reputation of being “socially maladjusted.” Australians love a tragic hero. The iconic lead singer of AC/DC who died in 1980, is buried in the Fremantle Cemetery. The place of his memorial has been listed as being of historical significance in the National Trust of Australian (WA) register. Over the years people have made the pilgrimage to his place of rest in their droves.
Do you know this kind of talk when you are in a conversation and the other person asks you ‘What’ you are — or what ‘you’ are doing?
That was THE BEST THING I’VE EVER seen in my life!

Performing at places who are keen to the idea of original music is hard to find these days. Considered few and far between, when we do stumble across one, it's like finding a diamond in the rough. I've been lucky enough to find many places like this in NJ over the years. Cafe Improv is one of those places. Sponsored by the Arts Council of Princeton, the venue is designed to hold events and showcase local artists work. From artists paintings landscapes to musical artists creating soundscapes, the building resonates beauty. It doesn't hurt to have the Princeton Public Library right across the street for foot traffic, advertising, marketing, and appreciation.
This video is of me, Jim Gaven, performing an original song at local music venue and club, Katmandu, located in Trenton, NJ. Shot in 2009, it brings me back to a simpler time in life. Myspace was rampant, collecting 'friends', or as I thought of them, potential fans. I was single and was about to buy my first house. Amazing how so many things happen in 10 years. The song is called, 'The Girl Next Door' and is just about that. It's about falling in love with the girl next door...someone in your neighborhood...someone you might have went to school with. It's not about a fantasy person like a celebrity. It's about the real deal with someone in your realm of possibilities and proximity. Written in an open tuning, it is a song I used to love to play live. This is before I actually fell in love with the woman I am now married to.
