Songs that help me relax and to escape the world are ones that would work for almost no one else. I relax to the most aggressive songs around, I also went to concerts to relax to aggressive live bands till poor health stopped it. Even though I am getting old the music hasn't changed, in fact its probably become more extreme over the years.
Sex pistols- Anarchy in the uk
That's the exact record in the background as I type, its from the filth and the fury album, which to be fair is a lot of pre existing versions or pre existing songs. I wasn't old enough for punk the first time around, I listened to bands that were influenced by punk and worked backwards. Its often argued about the first punk releases or the first punk band, but the pistols were probably the biggest UK band. 3/4 of the band are on a 50th anniversary tour very soon.
Sepultura- Refuse/Resist
If anyone asks my single favourite song this is often the answer. From the tribal drums to the song about the state of the bands Native Brazil. The band unfortunately splintered over the next few years, indeed they are on their final tour, with just 1 original member. It comes from the Chaos AD album, one which also would fill the top spot for albums.
Slayer- Reign in blood
If the pistols were instrumental in punk, Slayer were the same for thrash metal. This is the area I inhabit the most, often playing Slayer for hours. I have also enjoyed being in many a Slayer mosh pit, when this song comes on it gets just a little more maniac. The songs are often controversial and cover many anti religion topics. Often the problems go away if you listen to the songs properly understand what they are about.
Cattle decapitation-Bring back the plague
The bands name would put many off, probably not taking them seriously. They are actually a vegan band and very strong on animal rights. The songs are written as if the animals were actually people. Another thing is the incredible vocal range of the singer, Travis Ryan. A great frontman and a passionate campaigner. A great song to join in with, if you can translate the words.
Lorna Shore-Sun //Eater.
One of their finer songs among a big choice, Deathcore is their official designation. They encompass 2 very well known members, an incredible drummer and a majestic drummer. Austin Archey can be found all over u tube, with clips of his drumming and giving lessons. He is one of the 3 or 4 fastest around, even though it often looks like he has nodded off mid song.
Singer Will Ramos is probably the best deathcore vocalist operating at present. From his massive range to brutal pig, troll and other more extreme vocals. There is a video somewhere of him having a camera put in his throat so doctors can see the effect of the different styles.
Pantera- walk
This is a classic of its kind, often covered by others and played at many shows between bands. The band were finding their feet after originally being a big hair band. After the style change they found success with many brilliant songs over a good few albums. One of the best lead guitarists, sadly take to early during a club gig. The 2 remaining members are touring again, often supporting Metallica, but also headlining them selves.
Machinehead-Davidian
Founder Robb Flynn started the band in the early 90s and is the only original member. Bassist Adam Duce was the 2nd longest member but has been gone from the band a fair few years now. This song is one that's always played, often during the encore or late in the set. It wakes the crowd up, even after one of the bands 2 1/2 hour sets. The big intro builds into a strong song and 4 minutes of mayhem in any mosh pit.
Fear Factory -Edgecrusher
Again, a strong song on a strong album. The one fairly constant member is Dino Cazeries, the guitarist. They have gone through many others, mostly for touring purposes. The songs mainly are about the threat from big corporations, a robot world and the threat to the human race. Early albums are more heavy and industrial, the later albums are more precise and cleaner production is evident.
The album demanufacture is seen as their classic, the one with the biggest grouping of the best songs. I saw the release tour, the 20th anniversary tour and also the 30th anniversary.
Stiff little fingers-Alternative ulster
While thinking what to put next this song begun. A very political viewpoint from the 70,s , one of the more rockier bands. More intelligent lyrics than many, with a strong message in each. Another band who toured for many years after punk petered out . A real band of decent musicians and great songs.
Ramones-Happy families
The Ramones could be argued to be the first punk band ever. Limited musical ability, played quickly, often very short songs. They had one of the strongest influences on UK punk and their influence can be heard everywhere. Although I liked the songs I knew of the band it was during an American holiday that I got a greatest hits disc. All the best songs and a fair few that aren't so well known, an important band that should be checked out
Metallica- Trapped under ice
The early days produced many of the best songs, many still played today. The early albums are more thrashier then the latter crop. The songs are often faster and played with venom. Some later releases hark back to the early stuff, but not enough for any fans who know the early stuff
That's it for now, will be back soon with all the records I have forgotten and bands I wanted to add.
