Notes from the Mind Palace
Entry 8. My Karaoke Lineup for When I Need to Burn the World Down and Dance in the Ashes
Karaoke isn’t just singing for me — it’s a personality test, a confession booth, a therapy session, and a threat all rolled into one. My lineup is chaotic on purpose. It’s designed to confuse people, amuse people, scare people, and remind myself that I’m still alive. I also do it alone. So there is that.
Here’s what I queue up when I grab the mic:
“Hot Damn” — Ivy Levan
Because sometimes you need to kick the door open like you own the place and announce you know what is going down.
“Down to the Bottom” — Dorothy
A song that feels like sinking and rising at the same time.
“Got Your Number” — Serena Ryder
Sharp, punchy, and perfect for calling out ghosts.
“Happy Ever After” — Gin Wigmore
A fairy tale with teeth.
“War Is My Destiny” — Ill Bill
Because sometimes the chaos needs a soundtrack.
“Last Breath” — Vinnie Paz
Heavy, gritty, and perfect for when the room needs to feel something.
“Violet” — Hole
Raw, messy, iconic — exactly the kind of energy karaoke deserves. Or my shower.
“Want You Bad” — The Offspring
Fast, loud, and fun enough to make the crowd wake up and make them remember someone they do not want to.
“Ayup” — Spose
I like to mess with people in Wisconsin. Enough said.
“Trying to Find a Balance” — Atmosphere
Because sometimes the mic becomes a confession.
“Whore” — Rehab
I hate this song, but I love swearing into a microphone. It’s a problem. A massive would-have-been-burned-at-the-stake kind of problem.
“Dirty Pretty” — In This Moment
A song that feels like glitter and blood and reminds motherfuckers I am not a toy for their amusement.
“Burn Your Life Down” — Tegan and Sara
Soft chaos. Controlled fire. Reminds me of my life.
“Where Is My Mind” — The Pixies
My all‑time favorite. This one is me.
“The Only Exception” — Paramore
Because even feral people get sentimental sometimes. I know I do all the time. That too, in and of itself, is a friggin problem.
“Eyes on Fire” — Blue Foundation
Slow burn, dark edges, perfect for late‑night karaoke.
“Cheated Hearts” — Yeah Yeah Yeahs
A song that feels like running through neon, and it’s always directed at someone.
“Bleed But Never Die” — Ecca Vandal
Chaotic survival anthem.
“Power of Moonlight” — Tiger Army
A little supernatural swagger never hurts, with a beat that says hey, wake the fuck up, I’m singing here.
“Real Wolf” — Ill Bill
Because sometimes you need to howl and say some pretty nasty things to wake the room up. Or get kicked out. Depends on the vibe. I usually get kicked out.
“Little Swing” — AronChupa
Unhinged circus energy. Perfect for confusing the crowd.
“Pretending” — HIM
And “Death Is in Love With Us” — HIM
Two flavors of gothic melodrama. Both necessary.
“Savior” — Rise Against
A crowd‑pleaser with teeth.
“Never Too Late” — Three Days Grace
For when the room needs emotional damage.
“Wonderwall” — Oasis
Because every karaoke night needs one song that makes people groan.
“I Caught Myself” — Paramore
Sharp, emotional, and perfect for belting.
“Bite Me” — Avril Lavigne
Petty, loud, and fun — a nice way to remind someone they played with the wrong person.
“Hurt” — Wage War
Heavy enough to shake the floor.
“My Dick” — Mickey Avalon
Because chaos is a lifestyle and everyone needs to know how big my proverbial dick is.
“Handlebars” — Flobots
A song that starts normal and ends like a manifesto.
“Move It Like You Stole It” — ZZ Ward
My all‑time go‑to. This one is pure Syl energy.
The Bottom Line
Most of my “shows” aren’t on a stage.
They’re in the shower, or in my room, or in the car when no one is looking.
I don’t actually do karaoke — I just perform like a menace in private, belting out chaos to an audience of shampoo bottles and ghosts.
And honestly? That’s exactly how I like it.
