Being Proud & Disabled in an Often Ableist World
Disability Pride Month occurs every July in the United States. It is a reminder of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July 1990, but also as a reminder disabled people exist and not just for able folks to pity or treat with disdain.

Chipped Paint
I watched her grow up. Her mother sang lullabies and read her storybooks and remembered to do all the voices. I often wondered what she dreamt of, and wished I could soothe her on the nights her dreams turned dark. I couldn’t protect her from the monsters in her dreams, much less reality.

Salem’s daughter
I can trace my family back to Salem. The branches of our tree go many ways, holding up figures all throughout history. I am related to Edward I of England through his daughter Joan, who ran off with a knight! There are mad men and mysteries, stories and many different histories. This is just on my Father's side! The Pickering family name is steeped in history, and my particular branch can be traced to the Pickerings of Salem, who built the still standing Pickering house.

I am free
I was still a young adult when my father died. It’s something that even now, almost two decades later, I am still processing. Grief is strange like that, sure, they tell you the stages… but never how long you’re in them, or the intensity or how personal each stage can become. Nothing ever prepares you for loss, and it all becomes one big learning lesson. One day you've got a million things to say to someone and the next day they're gone and your words fall away, sunken by silence so deafening you wish you could just scream.

A Little Bit Of Larceny
Carla couldn't stop trembling. Did they really pull it off? Her nerves were getting the best of her and she had a lump in her throat that she just couldn't swallow. They needed to do this, there was no other way for them to fix things.

Bloodlust
I should have known from the beginning. She had sunk her claws into me, and it was too late. There were so many signs and bright red flags that I blatantly decided to ignore. Those signs led me to this path and now my final destination because I couldn't bother to trust in my gut instincts. The green flags apparently were too vibrant for me to focus on any of the red flags glowing next to them.

Objects In The Rearview MirrorTop Story - May 2023
I spent a lot of my formative years on the road. My father was in the military and when we were stationed all around the country (after I spent my early childhood in Japan). Going from place to place in our minivan was always the solution. We drove from Virginia to California with a pitstop in Washington to visit family on the way down. We drove up and down each coast and the one the that always remained the same was music. Music on the radio, music in my earphones from my bright yellow walkman and later on, my portable CD player. So many songs not only were the guidemaps to my childhood, and I can remember the places we were when I really felt them for the first time.
