I Am a Sexual Assault Survivor
Imagine, being 15 years old, sitting on the floor of your bedroom closet, holding the only weapon that you can find – 5# ankle weights. Shaking with adrenaline and fear, hiding from the man that just sexually assaulted you. Hiding from your own stupidity, your own responsibility, your vulnerability, your mistakes. Believing the words – that you were a tease, that you led him on, that it was your fault.

Immigrants Among UsTop Story - August 2021
On January 28, 2017, a protest was held at JFK International Airport to oppose the implementation of then-President Trump's executive order (#13769,) that called for a suspension of all immigration to the United States for a period of 120 days. As hopeful immigrants were being turned away, I remembered being an impatient three-year-old in that very terminal, waiting to pick up my new baby brother who was flying from Vietnam with a plane full of other refugees. The plane of war-orphaned babies and children was held up at customs in Paris for nine hours, and people were afraid that their children were going to be turned away. More than forty years later, the place where we had once welcomed these immigrants, was now turning other hopefuls away.

"Well, Actually..."
My adult son is smart, ethical, and socially aware. I’m incredibly proud to have raised a human whose principles cause him to speak up, and to actively support social causes that promote peace and justice. He is extremely comfortable challenging people when their comments could be interpreted as racist, homophobic, or otherwise offensive. At least, he seems to have no trouble telling me when my words are questionable. “Well, that’s a very middle-age white woman thing to say,” he told me recently. I’m never quite certain if he is teasing me, or actually concerned about statements that I have made. I think maybe it’s a little of both. For the most part, even though he is often quick to react, I appreciate his passion and ability to challenge me to consider my own words, and behaviors.

Learning to Be Selective
I know I’ve been showing my snarky side a lot. It’s certainly a part of me that I feel comfortable letting loose a little bit here. Not only is this space akin to a private journal, but I find snark to be a bit more entertaining for my “readership” so to speak. Okay, I know I only have like 20 followers, but who knows? Maybe one day I’ll get a book deal out of this bitch! Humor & being a bit over-the-top has always been a means of surviving and fighting through challenges and hurt in my life. BUT – BUT – BUT – I’m actually a really nice person. I have long held the belief that when it comes to dating and people in general that everyone deserves a chance beyond first impressions. I know that sometimes folks have off days, but I also recognize intrinsic value in people. Maybe you’re a janitor, overweight, scarred, damaged, have a lisp or even an illness or disability – this shouldn’t define you as a person. People have lots of experiences and circumstances that bring them to different places in their life and I may not want to walk a mile in their shoes, but I’ll usually give them a shot and see what they’re about. I believe in being kind – at least until I have reason to tell you to fuck off.

Eyes Towards the Horizon
For Beth, the water had always been a place of healing. After a particularly nasty divorce, she had thought about taking up permanent residence under the covers of her big, lonely king-sized bed. (Why “King” exactly? And why “Master” bedroom? Did everything have to be engendered and patriarchal?)

Reflections on My First Month
I admit that I had some concerns about Vocal prior to joining a month ago. I asked a friend who is an award-winning, professional writer if he thought that Vocal was a scam. He said he didn’t take part in “pay to play” contests, but that he didn’t think that Vocal was "a scam exactly," but that they didn’t adhere to some industry standards for length and genre. Nonetheless, I was drawn by that $20,000 “doomsday challenge” prize and already had a story outlined in my head. I decided that I would pay for a YEAR MEMBERSHIP in advance, and force myself to write something for all of their writing challenges for twelve months. I really liked the writing prompts, and the deadlines “forced” me to be disciplined in my writing for the first time.

It Started With an "Unusual Request" and THEN it got Interesting!
Nearly a decade ago, I went through a divorce and started dating for the first time as an adult. When friends suggested I write about my experiences, I started a blog. I have been "revisiting" some of my former exploits lately, and decided to share, using my real name, for the first time. This piece was first published in April, 2013. Edits have been made for clarity and continuity.
