Where The Day Meets the Bay
Abstract This visual research article examines a personal photographic record of sunsets observed across Tagoloan and Cagayan de Oro in Misamis Oriental. The collection was assembled during the author’s first year in the province after arriving on 13 December 2025 for an assignment as a Consultant Document Controller on a major infrastructure project. Using repeated, place-based observation and visual description, the article considers how sunset changes the perception of six environments: Paco Beach in Barangay Gracia, Poblacion in Tagoloan, the Mindanao Container Terminal area, Puerto, the Cagayan de Oro Coastal Road, and Malaiba in Barangay Casinglot. The images reveal a recurring relationship among sky, water, industry, settlement, and movement. Rather than presenting a controlled atmospheric-science study, the work is framed as reflective visual inquiry: a documented encounter with place, supported by geographic and coastal context. The central finding is that sunset is not merely a scenic background. It becomes a daily lens through which working landscapes, shorelines, roads, and communities can be seen as one connected regional environment.

No, Jiangxi Xiaochao Has Not Swept Jiangzhehu
I do not know who first coined the phrase “Jiangxi xiaochao has swept Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai.” People repeat it often enough that it sounds true. It is not. Jiangxi xiaochao has not swept Jiangnan, and it has not swept Jiangzhehu, the shorthand for Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai. The phrase reads like the work of someone who spent time in Hangzhou, Wenzhou, or Jinhua and mistook a dense local migrant-food scene for a regional trend.

In the autumn of 2018 I dragged two suitcases into Whampoa Garden. Company posting, ten-month lease. Before that, every trip to Hong Kong had been a short business trip or a family visit: a few days of Victoria Harbour, cha chaan tengs, the Star Ferry, the city as a postcard. On my first night as a resident I went downstairs to find food, walked into a cha chaan teng, and recognized the words "iced lemon tea" on the menu. It came sweet enough to make my teeth ache. I waved the waiter over and asked if I could have it less sweet. He looked at me and said, "Next time say 'less sweet' first," then turned and walked off. I drank that tea for forty minutes. The ice melted and the sweetness was still there.
