From 'Reefer Madness' to Marijuana Legalization
Imagine—if you can—a social gathering of young millennials enjoying a pseudo intellectual debate while passing around the vape. Consider the affluent suburbs, where pre-rolled joints from Willie's Reserve are handed out while guests are greeted by the hosts. Think about the factory workers, truck drivers, laborers, and clerks who smoke marijuana to ease the boredom of the day. Businessmen, brokers, attorneys, and accountants score an ounce or two of quality weed from the firm's friendly dealer, be it a stock boy or another partner. Marijuana, once feared is now as much a part of our culture as much as beer and hotdogs.

John and Ken had a big problem. What had been a load of almost 7,000 sizable peyote buttons (averaging 6.5 grams a piece) when they’d scored it out in Arizona, was 100 pounds of slime by the time they got it back to New York City. The flavor was unmentionable. The stench was enough to waste goats at 200 yards—nauseating was far too nice a term. The two desperate dealers realized that while almost anyone can put up with the ritualistic vomiting that often accompanies a heavy duty trip on fresh peyote, only the hell for leather masochist would chew down on rotten buttons.

The way things are going, buying marijuana will soon be as easy as buying alcohol or cigarettes. It will be interesting to see how marijuana will be advertised once it is federally legalized. There are innumerable approaches that can be taken in marketing pot. Will it be treated as if it's a health product, like aspirin? Or will it be toted as a recreational product and sold to the public like sounds systems or games? Maybe it will be packaged as exotica, like perfume. Or a status symbol, like an expensive automobile. The possibilities are endless.

Everyone fashions themselves a weed aficionado these days. I'm like "Dude, enough. We can all go to Leafly." But I personally like to keep it old school and collect my cannabis culture books. This has the added benefit of increasing my book shelves' impressiveness. Seriously, at any given moment, there are so many people borrowing my weed books that I have had to start making people sign them out. I keep a spiral notebook on top of the case. Even tied a pencil to the spiral binding. Very geeky vibe. I have started collecting books again and recently found these two books in a used book shop in Portland. I am a marijuana bibliophile. Marijuana Potency and The Great Book of Hashish are my most recent weed book finds.

Stoners invented heavy metal music, influenced by centuries of occult chanting witches spells and a counter culture movement that began in the early 1970s. Numerous albums covers and song lyrics hinted at the cannabis culture. Today, stoner rock bands span from the psychedelic to the hard core pounding of drums and bass into a rhythmic trip of intensity. It is the female led bands that have bound the past to the future. It is women who bind life's future to its past. It is women who lead the stoner rock evolution. The ladies of stoner rock lure us to the list of weed to smoke with your favorite leading lady.

The commercialization of cannabis is upon us. It comes hand in hand with legalization. For centuries medical communities have known of the healing aspects of marijuana, but the institutional health and wellness community could not afford to officially be associated with cannabis ingredients. All that has changed as states continue to legalize and the federal government decriminalizes. Cannabis is becoming a regular in the ingredients for health and beauty products.

They really want the media to move on about the whole nun thing. Their mission is more important: reshaping the tarnished reputation of a plant that provides numerous health benefits. “The Cannabis plant,” writes Sister Kate in a forum post on their website, “has, against science and truth, been maligned and lied about for seventy-five years and the lights have now gone on, and it is time for everyone to know, for everyone to see. So we try to bury our indignation, when our earnings are over-stated or our mission is made to look greedy and capitalistic, because their spin is getting the conversation going.”
