Morgan E. WestlingPublished 5 years ago in StyledWhen Extravagance and Fashion Make Love
Every time I hear someone say they don't like avant-garde fashion because "they could never wear that in real life," the most genuine sense of confusion overwhelms me. Not only because of the fact that the clothes weren't created for them to wear, but also because avant-garde fashion is more than just clothes on a runway it is fashion proving it's more than just industrialized garments on some Macy's clothes rack. And while yes, I am aware that opinions on this topic may vary, I feel the desire to address the creations these designers are showcasing.

I can vividly remember visiting my older cousins when I was a child and getting ecstatic when I walked through the door and saw three gigantic garbage bags filled with clothes for me to try on and shop "for free." There would be college t-shirts that made me feel like a grown up and there would be nice dresses that I knew I would never wear, but they would look good in my closet when my friends came over to play.

What is the purpose behind wearing clothes? Do we spend all of this money we acquire on jeans, dresses, shirts, and accessories for ourselves, or is there an underlying reason?
My T-Shirt Business
I have three sample shirts, “Denial is not Just a River in Africa,” “Don’t Give Me Shit About My Meds,” and “Sober!!” I’m debating what shirts to make next. I need to get the “Sin Vergüenza” T-shirt going, or perhaps “Bill Wilson Sent Me.” I’m interested in making t-shirts to sell on my Etsy store but my bank is going to shut down my business account on January 30 if I don’t make extra money to put in that account. I’m looking for a steady paying job, and to publish my writing somewhere, as well as write articles. This is one way I have to generate funds. My t-shirt business is supposed to make sales on the Etsy store. I’m going to try to do this when I make extra income from a part-time work from home online job.
Iria Vasquez-PaezPublished 5 years ago in StyledInterview with an Ethically Motivated CEO
This interview came out of a research project I completed for my English class. The project was on the subject of "fast fashion," which is a term used to reference the production of cheap, in demand clothing. I interviewed Jessica Kelly, the founder of Thr3efold, which is a company with a "threefold mission of people, planet, and profit" that is working to connect designers with ethical factories and form business relationships that are economically sustainable and environmentally friendly. One of the things about Thr3efold that piqued my interest was the fact that their founder is from my hometown, and she has firsthand experience with the local impact of fashion and how it makes its way down the chain of ownership. You can read the interview below.
