Do we live a real life in the present or do we only live a life online?! What kind of life is that?!

There is so many wrong things with the fact of being so lost in our mobile devices and being literally sucked into our social media, here it is just a couple...

You know, I`m not saying that technology is evil or that social media is bad, but you know, it all has it`s limits. I also know that during this pandemic, we didn`t really have much of a choice but turn to our screens and entertain ourselves with it. I don`t talk about those times. I`m talking about the fact that on a regular basis, when life is normal, we can`t live without them. I mean, we can`t have a conversation with someone without checking our phones every 5-10 minutes. We can`t have dinner with family or friends without having our phones with us. Let me not even mention the fact that we can`t eat out anymore without posting a picture about it on Instagram. I get it, occasionally you wanna take pictures of it, because it`s a piece of art, been there done that, but not every single time.

I just wonder what the next generation will think of us one day looking at our pictures, that we have more pictures about food than we have about ourselves. Great job! We look at the pictures about the 40`s, 50`s, 60`s and we say that they were classy and elegant, but you look at the 10`s and you wonder what just happened?! Whatever, that`s just one part of it.

The thing that makes me very uncomfortable about this social media ruling the world stuff is the influence it has on people, especially on the younger generation. They basically live on their social media platforms and what they see on them becomes their reality. Let`s just think about this a minute, do we want that?! Do we want to have everything on social media become our reality?! I mean, yeah I know, we post our highest of highs on these places, because in one way or another we want to show it to others or we want to show off. You know I`m right. The problem starts with the fact, that for them, that`s the normal, and everything that doesn`t look like that is bad. Let`s take an example with a fictional character called Joey, he is a totally normal 16 years old living with his parents. He has everything he needs, but his family isn`t rich or influential. There is nothing wrong with it, right?! Right. He has a friend called Matt, he has a decent following on TikTok out of the fact that his family is crazy rich, he shows off their huge house, expensive cars, amazing travelling destinations and their expensive lifestyle left and right. So Joey goes on Instagram and sees all of these and then he looks at his life and feels bad. Joey becomes bitter and angry at the fact that he can`t have everything that Matt has, even he has everything he needs and could ask for. The problem is that he only sees people`s highest of highs and he compares it with a usual day in his life. Joey could be Monica, Justin, Ann,... Anyone.

It is not only related with teenagers, mothers post their kids achievements and other mothers instantly think that they are failing at being a mother, just because their kids succeed in other ways and such.

The other day I saw this conversation on the internet:

#1: - Do you have Instagram?

#2: - No.

#1: - Do you have Snapchat?

#2: - Still no.

#1: - Then what do you have?

#2: - A LIFE. - Dramatic hair flip and leaves the room.

It made me think a little bit of the truthfulness of this all, because it`s really true by now. We judge people because they are not on every kind of social media, but they would have at least as many reasons to judge us for forgetting the actual meaning of life. What I`m trying to say is, that nowadays we are having experiences to put it on social media, not to enjoy them. There are people who goes to a nice coffee shop just to take pictures there. Not for the nice coffee or the experience and the nice time to enjoy it. We live to post and brag, we don`t live to enjoy.

Probably now you are asking, what to do with it?! Well... now that life is slowly getting back to it`s normal, we need to re-evaluate what we want and what we need in life. Make friends, pick up a hobby, disconnect from the WIFI and reconnect with the everyday life. So let`s charge ourselves at least as much as we charge our phones. Let`s maintain our mental health as much as we maintain our image on social media. Let`s enjoy what we do and not just entertain others.
