To Be Horribly Human

The emotions rule

The eyes open, the heart beats, the excitement begins,

A new day, a new relationship, a new friend,

The giddiness of it all, the smile that graces a face,

Confidence, hope for the future, anticipation, the love to transcend.

***

A few hours of company, fun and adventure,

The heart is little lighter, problems pushed aside,

The deliciousness and newness of a connection,

The emotional upheaval of a new possibility, two beings collide.

***

The happiness of compatibility, the strength of dreams,

The initial expectations, the pictured future in one’s head,

At first all is swell, going as planned, ecstatically simple,

An unrealistic dream, but real life intercepts instead.

***

Another day is dawning, eyes open in trepidation,

Anxiety causes the heart to race, over-thinking at play,

Questions unanswered, doubts steadily creep within,

Worry and concern at the forefront of everything they say.

***

Communication has broken, unhappy thoughts ignored,

The barrier between two people heightens,

If only a word or two was spoken, discussed honestly,

But within the delicate balance of a relationship, one is too frightened.

***

The ending is on the horizon, no longer fighting for a stay of execution,

The inevitability has been taken on board, accepted,

The future dreams are forgotten, wasted,

All due to the reality of possibly being rejected.

***

The complexity of human nature,

The sadness of being horribly human, imperfectly flawed,

The relationship could have been saved, certainly salvaged,

If with honesty and trust the emotions outpoured.

***

Unfortunately those things that make us horribly human,

Especially the complexity of past experiences and emotions,

Ruin and destroy such wonderful relationships, love lost,

If we don’t communicate, fearing the up and down motions.

***

We hold our own expectations, our own needs and heart rendering triggers,

Projecting these onto those we absolutely adore,

Fighting our own demons, insecurities and heartbreaks,

Blaming the other for our pain, fears, terror and more.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

    Beautifully written & insightful!

  • Honesty and trust. Those two are the foundation of a relationship. Your poem held so many truths. It was very relatable!

  • Communication is key. But as you say, it takes two & if one is either unwilling or afraid....
