The Big Hat Man
a poem
The Big Hat Man
walked slowly and surely south
along the beach with the warm green water.
The women and the men swimming in the water waved at him.
He waved back and walked on.
One man said to his wife,
"It takes a big man to wear a big hat."
"Gracias," said the man.
"De nada," he replied.
"How did he know what you said? He is so far away," said his wife.
"I don't know. But we both heard him say, Thank you."
"Si," she admitted.
The Big Hat Man walked on south,
slowly and surely
along the shore of the warm green water
until he disappeared
in the waves of heat rising from the summer sands.
