The Comfort Crisis:
In recent years, trauma has undergone a cultural transformation so sweeping that it has reshaped how people understand their families, their childhoods, and even their identities. What was once a clinical term describing events that overwhelm a person’s ability to cope has expanded to encompass nearly any experience that causes emotional discomfort. This expansion has not occurred in isolation. It is part of a broader cultural shift in which personal narratives are treated as unquestionable truth, emotional intensity is rewarded socially, and ordinary relational friction is reframed as evidence of deep psychological harm. The result is a growing number of individuals who believe they are escaping toxic families when, in reality, they are escaping the ordinary discomforts of human relationships. This phenomenon, which can be described as a comfort crisis, has profound implications not only for families but also for those who have endured genuine trauma and now find their experiences diluted, doubted, or overshadowed by exaggerated or fabricated narratives.
