My rich rewards

I often remember back to the days that were us,

The good and bad, ups and downs, love and pain,

It was an experience like no other, that was for sure,

And I don’t believe I’d ever want to experience it again.

💗

But it was also precious and rewarding at times,

I’d never felt so loved in all my past relationships,

The heart palpitating moments, the forging of the future,

Will never, in this lifetime, be eclipsed.

💗

I look back and envision what it may have looked to the outside world,

A train wreck? A disastrous love affair?

The wrong man I’d chosen once more, maybe?

To be honest, I was so in love, I didn’t care!

💗

What the outsiders never realised,

What they never stopped to think,

Was it there was a reason I’d attracted you into my life,

A reason our time together was in sync.

💗

I hear them ask, what good could there possibly have been?

And I’ve an answer ready for their ears to hear,

“It made me who I am today,

It helped me overcome my greatest fear.”

💗

“But it was also my way of walking through my personal war zone,

Of discovering who exactly I was meant to be,

It helped me welcome the lost pieces of myself,

And made me confront the darkness to set it free.”

💗

“It was a necessity on my agenda, a rite of passage if you will,

A master class, an initiation into the wounds of my soul,

You made me party in the underworld, face my demons,

Dance with my shadow, my darkening emotions taking a toll.”

💗

“But you also opened my heart, allowing it to blossom,

And taught me to break society’s confining rules,

You demanded that I grow into my imperfections,

And snub my nose at the judgements lauded by the fools.”

💗

As a result of our passionate and all consuming love affair,

I was eventually expelled, a totally different woman, into the light,

More genuine, more real, more passionate, more alive,

I may have risked everything, but the rewards I reaped were a true delight.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
