Great Smoky Mountains
for the love of you
I make messes - it's what I do
for you
_____
this morning's melting golden-hour sun
drips its buttery light across our breakfast table
soft and airy as buttermilk biscuits
hot and flaky from the skillet,
honey and lemon for your sun-brewed tea,
sweet as you
in my flannel shirt
wearing your perfect no pants and smiling
to see the bouquet of willowy wildflowers
the someone who loves you
plucked and arranged loosely
in your favorite Tupelo honey tumbler
long hours before you woke and stumbled
toward our rented, open-air kitchen cathedral
where I’ve been cracking brown eggs,
and adding sea salt and crushed pepper and
whisking in aged white cheddar, spring onions, and orange bell peppers
because making you omelets
makes morning rise and shine
and I am resolved to ravish
as many lives as I can get with you

The last line brought it home in a big way!!! Ahh, the things I would do for a buttermilk biscuit right now...lol. They sound so good, always will. Loved your poem, Christy.
