not yours, not his, but MINE
I didn't understand why my nightmares and flashback were recurring again. I told myself 'it happened years ago and that I should be over it by now'. Little did I know that trauma imprints in our body/nervous system; till we are ready to consciously heal it. Everybody has their definition of trauma. Just because something might not be traumatic for you it doesn't mean it isn't for someone else. The impact trauma has on a person is huge. Just because it happened years ago doesn't mean a person has healed from it. It's common to have a delayed reaction. At the time I dealt with the amount I was ready to process. As I grew up my views and beliefs changed. I learned and experiences new things. There's only an amount of time where you can numb, distract or hide yourself before it catches up with you again.

Undesirable to Undeniable
Cody: At any point in your life or at any point in your career is there anytime you felt undesirable? I'm gonna be honest. Since I was born I was desired by everyone, my family, my friends, basically tearing me apart to all get a piece of me haha. Then came a day that it stopped. I fell off the mountain I was born. There wasn’t anyone to pick me up out of it. More than that instead of climbing out I wanted to simmer in it or let someone else rescue me. The friends stopped checking up on me, stopped hanging out with me. My fifty something turned to three, three which I still keep in contact with today. I...I don't know what really happened, I was born on a mountain top and everyone cheered me as a champion. But once I fell...they kept climbing without me, not even looking down to check on me.

Go through the bs, in order to get through the bs
People always say that if you don't like being around people, such as relatives, friends, a boss, co-workers; or even places like a hectic ass, vermin infested, people shoving city like New York- take them out of your life or leave. However, if you're always running away from whatever you do not like, how can YOU find out what you're made of? Listen, I'm all for avoiding conflict when absolutely necessary but there is such a thing as running away from Every. Damn. Thing.

Being a Female on a Skateboard
It all started with the interest of watching extremely sexy, young men riding skateboards at my local skatepark. I rarely saw girls riding skateboards, maybe rollarblades or bikes with training wheels. The skatepark is mainly run by boys. I only knew a few boys who’d let me ride their boards for fun. The enjoyment of riding a plank with four wheels really gave me the desire to learn and do more. So I did. Through my coming of ages, I learnt to ride around on streets, getting comfortable with the speed and balance but facing the skatepark raiding with men was the bigger fear. It’s hard to be confident and ride without thinking what the guys would think. It took me about a year to drop in on a quarter pipe. I practiced over night where no one was around. I was able to ride the park casually but obviously without doing any tricks or using the ramps and quarter pipes. But it was a progress. I studied videos and pro skaters such as Tommy Flynn, Tyson Peterson, Kadar, Jake Phelps, etc, doing tricks, skating transition and skating on the streets. Through this I felt more confident to learn tricks I knew names of. I ran into a young handsome man, just one year older than me with a unique and funny personality at my local skatepark. He skates incredibly insane. I was in awe. We clicked and started dating. He began helping me and teaching me to do multiple tricks such as 50-50, 5-0, grind, rock n roll, rock to fakie, switch, ollie, 180, etc, within few months.Young kids started coming to both of us, asking for help on how to do this and that. That’s when I knew, I can skate. A girl that skates. I started skating at different skateparks and meeting new skaters. Eventually, girls who mainly go to the skatepark and watch the boys skate started noticing me. They told me that I inspired them to start skating at the skatepark because I could do it. And while dating my skater boyfriend, many other male skaters noticed me at the skatepark, found me on socials and began texting me. However, I’m glad to be with my current boyfriend because he liked me when I was weak and didn’t know much about skating. He taught me and brought me to who I am today. I guess the coin flipped. It was once a girl watching sexy, young men skate, now it’s sexy, young men watching a sexy, fabulous, hard working, young woman, me, skate quite fine. But I’ve realised my passion for skateboarding is much bigger than that. I feel at home when I’m at the skatepark, knowing handsome friends, being able to skate in front of them comfortably and understanding that women can skate if they jump out of their comfort zones and enjoy the sport without fear of who is watching.

Know your worth as a young leader
When I got my feet under the desk in my first management job, I quite often found myself wondering if I am well placed to put my opinion forward in major discussions given the people I’m surrounded by have many more years’ experience and knowledge under their belts. These thoughts then turn into, if I ask questions or ask for guidance, am I proving to people that I am too young for this role? I would also wonder, if I put my opinion forward are people even going to listen to anything I have to say because of my age and are they going to take me seriously? I am now managing a national evidenced based program to raise awareness on dementia and create social change for people living with a diagnosis of dementia, their loved ones and the wider community.

Dreams Deferred
What Happens To A Dream Deferred? My grandmother on my father’s side always dreamed of seeing the Eiffel Tower. She always dreamed leaving her Homeland of Haiti-just for a week or so to go straight to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower. Raised under the strictest patriarchy rules, she was never allowed to travel without the presence of a man. Her first husband- the womanizer- never acknowledged what she wanted and her second husband-the wife beater-was too cruel to take her. When her second husband passed away and she decided she could go on her own “when the time was right,” she began getting these cloudy spots in her right eye. Merde. She murmured when those cloudy spots turned into blurred and impaired vision. She had developed glaucoma, and would never see anything clearly again, let alone the Eiffel Tower.

Rise Above
Too often, society tells us how we should think, feel, look & dress. Attempting to define our lives behind the covers of magazines and television screens. Too thin, too fat, too loud or laid back. Can't discipline your children without fear of outside involvement. Life filled with problems yet few resources to solve them. Listening ears attached to running mouths. Holding it all in just wanting to a way out. Many claim they'll be by your side, but everytime you look around it's not enough to count. Wearing many hats, playing many roles, filling many voids. Being everything for everyone except for the one who matters most. Yourself. How can you give 100% when you lack? It's impossible to give what you don't possess. Spreading yourself too thin leaves no room for your best. Home, work, family, friends. Always someting that needs to be done, but no idea where to begin. Take a step back, breathe and relax. Ain't got time no waste. Can't afford to get off track. At what point did it become ok to neglect our star player? Why hasn't anyone told us that self-love isn't selfish at all? In fact, it's necessary to remain afloat. There's nothing wrong with treating yourself. Buy that fancy dress you've been eyeing. Dine at that new restaurant you've been raving about. Enjoy a spa day. Know that you're just as beautiful as you were before the kids, marriage, career. Nothing's changed but the year. Dust your crown off & strut. Hold your head high and offer no explanation for making your well-being a priority. No one has to approve. However, respect is non-negotiable. Create the life you wish to live. What you don't feed will starve so give no energy to the naysayers. There is no box that you need to fit neatly into. Be different. Stand out. Remember, an original is always worth more than a copy. No one can be you better than you!

I Cost My Friend $40,000 Because I Didn't Believe In Myself
It is not easy to write about failure. It is especially difficult when the failure was not borne of a mistake but a mistaken belief in myself that turned out to be, ironically, not enough belief in myself. And it is a hundred fold more difficult, or a million, when that failure cost a dear friend financially, emotionally, physically and mentally. Sigh…

Feeling lost in a big world of expectations
My Life didn’t turn out the way I planned. I look at my peers and I compare myself to them. Here I am without the social expectations of what’s normal for my age. I’m 43 and I’m still waiting for my turn. I want the marriage and the lifestyle to go with it, but for whatever reason I was chosen to create my own path. I didn’t have a baby, or stay in a marriage, or even in relationship, I’ve gone job to job wondering why can’t I be like him or her who has the life I want. As much as I wanted to fit in, I had to bush wack my own path while I watched others sail past me in their fancy cars with two kids and a dog.
