Setting boundaries is so 2019
Okay — I am just going to start out by saying that I do actually believe having healthy boundaries, setting intentions, and flowing with the universe are useful practices. That being said, when I hear the Kardashians’ verbal fried moans about ‘setting boundaries’ (despite having signed up for endless seasons of a reality tv show based on their personal lives) or Tom Sandoval throwing the need to have boundaries at Jax Taylor during a fight between two men rapidly approaching middle age in a show centered on their friend group’s personal conflict (Vanderpump Rules to be exact), I’m left wondering if the idea of setting boundaries has lost all meaning. Is it proof that personal development has spread as far as reality TV or is it a warning that something as sacred as inner work has been co-opted to solidify our selfishness and disconnect from the collective? Is it possible that exercises like “setting boundaries” have become new age-y ways of refusing to take ownership, change, or examine the ways we are perpetuating injustices by insulating ourselves from anything that doesn’t bring us positive feels? And, if that’s the case, what can we do to ensure ‘setting boundaries’ doesn’t take on the same ickiness of sage smudges and crystals sold by Urban Outfitters and TJ Maxx?

The After
There is calm before the storm as well as after. In a time when all I want to do, we want to do is go outside, it’s not easy during a thunderstorm. It is almost a cruel joke to have a storm in Texas during a quarantine when every other year the state would be in a drought. The one time Texans don’t wish for rain we get it. Hours stretch longer, and mood drops even further into a grey abyss than before; but when the storm is over, I can’t help but want another one if it means the sky takes on a face like it did in the picture. From inside my house, the windows filled with orange light that seemed to beckon an audience to see the aftermath of the chaos that was raining down upon our home not thirty minutes earlier.

write what you know
Writing 101 Write what you know That is something I hear often so I’ll start with that. Even if this is a public platform and I’m writing so other people can read it I’d rather keep my identity a secret, even if it's for the time being. I was born and raised in Ethiopia, a country located in the horn of Africa. As such English is my second language.

Outside My Window
Outside my window, what do I see? I see car after car after car. Where are they going? Are they going to get gas, the gym, are they picking up medicine for their sick grandmother? I don't know. Maybe they do. The air reeks of sadness. Mr. Sun is not here. I know that if I step outside my apartment and look up in the sky, all I will see is clouds. With COVID, things are not like they used to be. Many restaurants are closed right now. For the few that are, there aren't dine in options; or they are encouraging social distancing. It's the kind of day that makes you want to stay in bed, sleep, or watch a movie. Make sure you have comfortable pajamas, because right now, THAT is the only comfort to be had. There is no end in sight. One can't even let out a cough or a sneeze without stirring up a panic. Friends who confide in one another can't provide a hug for relief for their friend their is hurting, or even a shoulder to cry on.

Treat Yourself: The Best Gifts Men Can Give Themselves
With so much going on at the moment, it's easy for men to ignore the importance of self-care. One of the fun things about manhood is that you never fully grow out of being a child, and no one expects you to. After all, boys will be boys, right?

Words
There's a special language within you. Honestly, how would you know if nobody told you, right? I use to be afraid to do something amazing at one point in my life. So it kept me from bringing out more potential, a lot earlier. Now, were just getting started! See, I found my language, so I'm here to write to you today. Through experience, don't ever neglect to love yourself on the inside. Don't forget about you. The sooner you start to realize that, is the earlier your progress can step forward and start speaking for you. The language you speak within, is the compass that can hinder you, or direct you, healthily. Of course there are mistakes that are made a long the way, but when you find your language. Oh man, what does it take to speak a language? A Voice! You knock out two birds with one stone. Finding your voice, saying no to the chit chatter around you (inside yourself), and saying YES to the greater things that are meant for you.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
I think we've all fallen into the trap of thinking someone else has something better than us, that they're happier than us or that we need to be more like them. Comparing your life to someone else's is unfair and a complete waste of energy. You've lived different lives, and comparing yourself to them or having negative feelings around the fact that they seem to have more or better things than you, is totally unjustified. You can use them as motivation to achieve something, but don't put yourself down because you don't currently have the specific things they have.
