How to Get Out of A RUT Quickly

A rut is a prolonged period of stagnation, generally without a clear end in sight. It can be caused by any number of things. Bad circumstances, lack of motivation, or simply not being able to see the path forward. You may be in a rut if you feel bored or unmotivated, like you're not moving forward and are unfulfilled. You start to notice that every day seems to be the same, and nothing changes. If this sounds familiar, don't worry; it happens to the best of us. But thankfully, it’s possible to get out of a rut and start feeling better again. In this video, we break down the steps you need to take to get back on track.

Step 1 - Accept The Situation The first step to getting out of a rut is to accept that you are in one. Don't beat yourself up over it, but don't make excuses or blame others either. Just be honest with yourself about your current circumstances. When you come to terms with reality and accept it, you can begin working toward finding solutions and moving beyond your current situation. It's also important not to make assumptions about how things will turn out. There may be opportunities that you can't see yet!

Step 2 - Identify The Cause In order to get out of a rut, you also need to figure out the root cause. And sometimes, the reason you feel stuck is painfully obvious. Maybe you're in a relationship that's not working out, and your partner isn't making any effort to fix things; or maybe your job is terrible, and you've been thinking about switching careers but haven't taken the plunge yet; or perhaps it's an internal factor related to your own mindset and how you perceive yourself. The important thing here is that you need to look inward and figure out what’s limiting you from reaching your full potential.

Step 3 - Take A Closer Look at Your Goals When you're in a rut, it can be hard to see why you should keep going. It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget about your long-term goals. But having a purpose even something small, will help you stay motivated and keep you moving forward. Sometimes we just need a little perspective on where we are and where we want to be. So take a closer look at your goals and decide if they're still meaningful. Knowing WHY you’re doing something will help prevent you from getting distracted by other pursuits that aren't aligned with your goals.

Step 4 - Make Small Changes Although it may seem like an obvious solution, many people try to solve their problems by throwing themselves into a frenzy of activity and then burning out before they even get started. It's much easier to start with one small change and build from there, than it is to try doing everything all at once. And don’t expect things to change overnight. Be patient with yourself. Also, make sure the changes you aim for are realistic, so they fit your lifestyle and won't be too difficult to stick with over time.

Step 5 - Say YES to Challenges You won't get out of a rut by staying in your comfort zone or doing the same old things you've always done. If you want to keep growing as a person, it's important to take some risks and just try things. Sure, it can be scary to try something new, but saying NO to challenges only keeps your life in an endless cycle of repetition and boredom. Saying YES will help break up a monotonous routine and allow you to expand your horizons.

Step 6 - Get Support If you’re trying your best but are still struggling to give yourself that extra push, you can seek out support from others. Whether it's a family member, friend, mentor or a therapist, telling someone about how you're feeling can help relieve some of the pressure. Discussing it also allows others to better understand your situation and it gives them an idea of what they can do to help.

You can also join a support group or community where people are working through similar issues so that you can motivate and encourage each other throughout your journey. When you're in a rut, it can seem like there's no way out. But with the right approach, you can find solutions to your problems that will get you moving again.
