Going Down the Wrong Path?

Move courageously, enthusiastically and fearlessly

Do you ever get that feeling? The one where you just know that you went 10 degrees off course?

It’s a great feeling when you consider it as it means you’ve listened to some sort of gut response and you’re now looking at ways to move away from what ever it is. Give yourself a high five for being aware and take gentle action now.

This is how I move ahead on my journey:

‘Move courageously, enthusiastically and fearlessly along on your journey. This way you’ll meet up with that ‘wrong way’ quickly and excitedly; which will bump you back on track rather than see you dribbling on along the way, suffocated by mediocrity and losing sight of your Journey in the fuzzy dust.’

This kind of mantra will sit really easily on those of you who are what I call Leapers as you suddenly see how you leapt into something and already have a (vague) strategy for moving away from it, hopefully.

For those of you who are toe-in-the-water peoples this kind of talk has you reaching for quantifications and examples and I understand where you’re coming from; I’ve been there myself, admittedly only for a wink of an eye, being that I’m a spontaneous type.

My point here is that 99.9% of the people who follow their Journey with enthusiasm don’t die in the attempt.

The path you take may have you feeling embarrassed, nervous, bewildered, disorientated, or mystified, but if you’re the one to laugh at yourself first, acknowledging that this particular learning curve didn’t quite turn out the way you wanted, then you’ll find it easier to move ahead with grace and ease.

I find that a great recipe for making better Journey choices is a mixture of:

  • Self Enquiry
  • Greater Self-Awareness
  • Improved Self Talk
  • Self Coaching

Self Enquiry: This doesn’t have to be a deep and totally involving mission, just check in with yourself more regularly and make it a habit to understand why you’re doing something; why you’re feeling this way.

Greater Self-Awareness: Self enquiry brings you to greater self-awareness. It may seem a little deep and meaningful when you first start to really check in on your motives and your responses, but the outcomes show you that this time spent is a great investment in the next part of You and your journey.

• Feel into how your body is responding right now

• Discover where any discomfort shows, calf muscles, tummy, shoulders, neck?

• While you’re completing this body scan choose to breathe love into your body, concentrating on the areas that show tension or tightness. This process is a kind of mind walk or meditation and is something you can do easily at work or otherwise in the public eye.

Improved Self Talk: Listen to what you say out loud. Listen to what you say to yourself (and to others) inside your head. Now consider that your ears hear all of this and your brain records it as a truth of sorts, so see where you can lift your game in your vocalizing. Initially take note of one area where you can improve your vocal content and, especially where it’s your self talk, lift your game.

Choose an easy topic to begin with to gain practice and momentum and aim to only approach those areas where you can believe (at least a little) the changes in your speech. Once you gain knowledge on how beautifully you can speak into ‘stuff’ then you can work more on the more emotional topics.

Self-Coaching: Learning from all around you is an amazing skill to grow, and more fully understanding yourself and your responses to life is one of the best and more honest things to accomplish.

I always promote that you investigate further before applying any big changes to your life. Take baby steps and look at the results.

Big steps can often be another way of showing yourself (proving to yourself) that it isn't working. Steady moves forward help you to understand how to travel Your Journey in your way.
