ESPN has let go of Van Gundy, Kolber, Rose, and Young.

As part of the network's employee layoffs on Friday, some 20 ESPN commentators and reporters were laid go, including Jeff Van Gundy, Suzy Kolber, Jalen Rose, and Steve Young.

After two rounds of forced layoffs by its corporate owner, the Walt Disney Company, ESPN had planned this third wave involving on-air talent to stop future cutbacks in off-air employees.

Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, stated in February that the business will eliminate or decrease 7,000 employment.

The notice made on Friday was similar to the one made in April 2017 informing hosts and reporters that they would be leaving the broadcast.

The process of finding more cost savings in the area of public-facing pundit compensation has started since ESPN has judged it is necessary given the present situation. When we negotiate individual contract renewals in the months ahead, we will continue to focus on cost management, as part of this effort, ESPN said in a statement. This is a really difficult procedure that involves people who have had a big effect on our business. We will achieve our financial goals and assure future development by making these challenging decisions, which are based more on overall efficiency than merit.

The initial news of Van Gundy and Rose's terminations came from The New York Post.

Since 2007, Van Gundy has been the leadin

g NBA analyst on the network. He recently finished calling a record-breaking 17 NBA Finals. Kolber was a seasoned ESPN veteran who served as the nightly co-host of a show when ESPN2 first aired in 1993.

She also hosted the "Monday Night Countdown" program on ESPN.

"Today I join the ranks of my many dedicated coworkers who have been let go. Heartbreaking, but ESPN was a terrific home for 27 years. So appreciative of my 38-year career! I'm especially proud of my longevity as a woman in this industry, Kolber stated on social media.

ESPN had also employed Rose since 2007. He was mostly involved with NBA studio programs, although he also co-hosted Mike Greenberg's "Get Up" morning show for 11 years, which debuted in 2018.

The areas that suffered the most were radio and ESPN's NFL coverage.

Both veteran draft expert Todd McShay, who also contributed to coverage of college football, and commentator Matt Hasselbeck lost their jobs.

Additionally impacted were the morning show hosts on ESPN Radio, Max Kellerman and Keyshawn Johnson, as well as the afternoon anchor, Jason Fitz. After Pat McAfee signed on to start his show on the network in the autumn, Kellerman's afternoon show on ESPN looked unlikely to continue.

Others are "SportsCenter" host

Ashley Brewer, LaPhonso Ellis, a college basketball expert, and Joon Lee, a baseball wri

ter.

Most will have their contracts bought out and get their full income. They would need to work out a separation agreement with ESPN if they wanted to take on another position.

After Shannon Sharpe quit FS1's "Undisputed" due to rising tensions with co-host Skip Bayless, Johnson and Rose could be the first two that spring to mind.

Over the course of the upcoming year, when contracts are evaluated or up for renewal, ESPN is anticipated to continue evaluating its talent pool. By choosing not to renew the contracts of veteran "SportsCenter" host Neil Everett, NFL analyst Rob Ninkovich, and NHL studio analyst Chris Chelios, it had already begun making some cuts.

While the NFL, NHL, and MLB contracts are established for several years in the future, talks to extend the NBA rights are anticipated to start in 2019.
