Mental illness is like slow poisoning cancer. It is an invisible enemy that is rotting personal life and relationships. Despite this fact, many people in the world do not categorize it under the health umbrella and because of this mistake, it goes unnoticed.

But, I think it is the most important dimension of health as it affects the person's state of mind which in turn affects physiological health. Moreover, mental health is not only restricted to the absence of psychological diseases but in fact, it is a balanced development of an individual's personality and emotional attitudes.

As a result, it needs to be monitored on a daily basis in order to live a harmonious life. There is a famous saying,

"Mental health is not a destination but a process. It is about how you drive, not where you are going"

Do you guys agree with this quote?

I totally do. I think, mental health similar to our physical health. Suppose, we exercise daily and eat a nutritious diet to keep our body hale and hearty, but one day we eat all types of junk and stale food. Don't you think it is going to have an impact on our well-being? I'm sure, it will definitely lower the immunity system.

Likewise, taking care of our emotional health daily is imperative and inevitable because we can afford to lower our mental immunity.

To perform this as a daily practice, proper knowledge and guidance are required to keep a check on it.

William Claire Menninger, a co-founder of The Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas, an internationally known center for treatment of behavioral disorders formulated some questions to ask ourselves to find out the status of our mental health.

He presented this simple questionnaire to be answered on a daily basis. They are as follows:

1. Are you always worrying?

2. Are you unable to concentrate because of unrecognized reasons?

3. Are you continually unhappy without a justified cause?

4. Do you lose your temper easily and often?

5. Do you have wide fluctuations in your mood from depression to elation, back to depression, which incapacitate you?

6. Are you troubled by regular insomnia?

7. Do you continually dislike being with people?

8. Are you upset if the routine of your life is disturbed?

9. Do your children or your dear ones consistently get on your nerves?

10. Are you browned off and constantly bitter?

11. Are you afraid without real cause?

12. Are you always right and other people always wrong?

13. Do you have numerous aches and pains for which no doctor can find a physical cause?

He added that the conditions charted in these questions are an indication of poor mental health in one degree or another. According to him, one needs to seek help from either a friend or family or doctors maybe, if the answer to any of these questions is "yes"

He even suggested some prompt and easy solutions to improving mental health. We can even call mental first aid.

  • Solution №1:

We must realize our mistakes and take a firm decision to rectify them.

  • Solution №2:

We must understand the fundamental truths of life like our true wants and desires. Because on this basis we can make our belief system positive.

  • Solution №3:

We must make sincere and tireless efforts to be happy irrespective of our material possessions.

  • Solution №4:

We must fulfill our social and family responsibilities like a trustee and, at the same time, remain free from unhealthy habits like overthinking and tensions.

Last Thoughts

Mental illnesses can take many forms, just like physical illnesses. As there are treatments for physical problems, so are for mental illnesses. We must not fear them but understand them, because the fear will disappear only when we learn more about them by talking openly about it and discussing it in social gatherings.

If you, or someone you know, have any kind of mental illness, there is good news: all mental illnesses can be treated.

I have shared my piece of knowledge with you folks. Share it with your friends and family. Even small participation can save a life.
