After careful research and testing, they successfully extracted artemisinin from sweet wormwood and conducted clinical trials. In 1967, Tu's team successfully demonstrated the antimalarial efficacy of artemisinin, and it eventually became a globally recognized antimalarial drug.

New Hope for Artemisinin Treatment of AIDS

After the successful development of artemisinin, Tu Youyou did not stop his research. With a deeper understanding of artemisinin's pharmacology, scientists are beginning to discover that artemisinin is not only effective against malaria, but also has potential therapeutic effects for a number of other diseases. One of the most striking findings is that artemisinin also has some inhibitory activity against HIV.

Artemisinin treats AIDS by inhibiting the replication of the HIV virus. Specifically, artemisinin inhibits the replication process of the virus inside the host cell by interfering with the reverse transcriptase activity of the virus and preventing the transcription of viral RNA into DNA. This prevents the virus from replicating and infecting other cells, thereby slowing the spread of the virus throughout the patient's body.
