If you’re anything like me, you occasionally realize that your closet is full of scratchy, stuffy, too-small shirts, pants, and dresses that you simply never wear. Whether you Konmari it (“does this sweater spark joy??”) or use the backward-hanger method (“I can’t believe I really didn’t wear that for an entire year!”), once you get tossing it’s hard to stop. Then, of course, it’s time to replenish your wardrobe. Instead of choosing whatever H&M’s got on their shelves this season (or other chemical-filled, sweatshop-made options), consider adding only clothing that’s responsibly made and always organic. The following brands offer some of the cosiest, softest, most dreamy options for lounging, stretching, yoga-ing, and sleeping. They’ll quickly become your favorite pieces, and you’ll feel good knowing that what you’re wearing supports textile workers in caring for their families and living healthy lives.

Satva

The Sanskrit word “satva” means steady, calm, peaceful, and pure. This perfectly describes the way that Satva strives to operate. They’ve partnered with Suminter India Organics, an environmental and socially conscious organic cotton production corporation in India, to make sure that the people making your clothes from start to finish are treated with respect and fairness. Everything that they make is free from chemicals like bleaches, toxic waxes, sulfur and heavy metals commonly used in the production of clothing. They use only natural, non-toxic plant based dyes in their adorable, active separates like their Manta Legging in Vector Print. One of their most popular patterns is the flattering Wave print which covers capris, camis, bralettes, and more. You'll probably have a hard time deciding, because they're all completely adorable.

PACT Organic Clothing

PACT’s mission is focused on every step of the process, from making sure the organic cotton farmers are fairly compensated to creating values-based shopping for their consumers. You’ll be surprised by how affordable organic clothing can actually be. It’s sweatshop free, ethically produced, and it all ties into a mission to change the apparel industry. For women, you’ll love their super soft underwear in many styles and maxi, wrap, and pocket dresses; for men, there are touchable, simply styled hoodies, undershirts, socks, and more. If you’ve got a little one, be sure to check out their selection of long-sleeved cuffed onesies to keep them cozy this winter season. Everything they make is free from toxic dyes, heavy metals, and pesticides and is never produced using child labor of any kind. It's awesome walking out of the house knowing that everything you're wearing (from the bottom layer up) is totally organic and good for people and the planet.

Noctu

If you’re looking for something ultimately soft and stretchy to wear to bed or for lounging around the house, Noctu is the organic (and Fair Trade!) clothing line for you. They’re committed to organic textiles but also gorgeous design so you never have to compromise on style. Harem pants, swing nightgowns, and tie tops in pale, natural shades of mint, grey, linen, and pink are intended to mix and match so you can wear whatever you’ve got in the drawer and feel beautiful, even when you’re just laying around on the couch. Noctu is a family business between two sisters based in Bath, UK and Oslo, Norway, and they’re both Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) FairTrade and SA8000 certified. Make sure to take a look at their sophisticated art, candles, and duvets when you’re finished checking out the sleepwear collection.

Shift to Nature

Shift to Nature has a pretty unique mission: to bring together an incredible selection of eco-friendly clothing designers in one place to offer you whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s bamboo, organic cotton, or vegan. You’ll find brands like ALAS (check out their color block Celestial Nightie) and A Peace Treaty NYC (soft, stylish, hand screen printed silk designer scarves that instantly dress up any outfit). High fashion doesn’t have to be sacrificed to your values - whether you’re looking for a basic layering piece or something fancy for a special event, you’ll probably be able to find it here. They have new items all the time, which means that when you check back frequently you'll always find something new. They’ve got organic linens for your bed and clothing for children as well, so check them out for your everyone on your Christmas list.

Bon Label

Do you just hate it when you buy what LOOKS like a super soft tee shirt that turns out to be way too thin and pills on the very first wash? SO disappointing. You’ll never be let down like that when you buy from Bon. Bon uses only GOTS certified organic cotton to produce a beautiful, high fashion line of women’s clothing in black, white, and a very occasional splash of color. Each garment is ethically made in Australia - the cotton is ring spun, and each garment is colored using eco dyes. I love their Pour de Bon Crew Tee and their Everyday Dress in white, gray, and black and white stripes - both look so soft and comfortable that you’d actually want to wear them everywhere. The best thing about choosing from Bon is that you never have to worry about making sure that what you're wearing matches - a major benefit when you're as fashion-challenged as I am.

Blue Canoe

One of the things that I love most about organic clothing lines is how often you can find something totally unfussy to wear - no fringe, no rhinestones, no dry clean only nonsense that’s going to get old really fast. Blue Canoe’s simple, perfect clothing is a flawless example of a simple style that you can feel good about wearing. Try a Bar Back Tee for a casual night out or their color block Pacific Dress for something a little more formal. All of their clothing has been made in the USA since the company started in 1994, and it’s all created from organic cotton and organic bamboo without harmful pesticides or toxic dyes. If you’re someone who suffers from allergies, Blue Canoe might be your solution to wear-to-work looks that transition easily to your evening out.
